[UPDATE 5:15 p.m.] Eureka Motel Evacuated After 3 Suspected Pipe Bombs Located

The Econo Lodge Hotel on Fourth and Myrtle in Eureka has been evacuated after three suspected pipe bombs were located. According to Brittany Powell, a spokesperson for Eureka Police an officer located an individual on searchable probation. During the search about 11:35 a.m., the officer located three suspected pipe bombs in the Econo Lodge Motel. The entire structure was evacuated. At this point, it isn’t known if the devices are active.  Officers have taped off the area and are keeping people from entering the area as they wait for an Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit to arrive.

Five individuals have been detained at this time.

UPDATE 1:03 p.m.: Captain Steve Watson of the Eureka Police at the scene of the incident.

UPDATE 1:14 p.m.: One of the five detained has been released.

UPDATE 1:43 p.m.: The bomb bot has been in and back out of the motel room once.

UPDATE 1:50 p.m.: Here’s an image of the bomb bot that law enforcement has been using to investigate the situation. image

UPDATE 3:15 p.m.: Powell says the bomb bot still has not gone into the suspect’s room because they are waiting on a search warrant.

UPDATE 4:01 p.m.: The search warrant has been obtained! Now the bot can enter the suspect’s room.

UPDATE 5:07 p.m.: Now that the warrant has been signed, Brittany Powell, EPD’s spokesperson is telling us that the team on site is “working to get the devices and render them safe.”

UPDATE 5:15 p.m.: Did you hear the huge boom? An explosion just rocked the area.

I’m curious… Were the “suspected” pipe bombs actually pipe bombs? Or were the explosions the detonations of the pipes themselves, bomb or not? I ask, because I’ve seen home-made hash oil distillers made of metal pipe which look a lot like bombs, at least to me. af
