UPDATE BELOW:

Original Post: Hwy 299 continues to be closed this morning with no estimated time of reopening after more of the mountain near Big Bar collapsed onto the road overnight. The slide which has been very active for the last few months dropped more materials onto Hwy 299 at post mile 23.3 in the Big French Creek area.

“A large amount of materials came down last night,” according to Phil Frisbee a spokesperson for Caltrans.

At this point Hwy 36 and Hwy 3 are open but they are not recommended for large vehicles. According to Caltrans road condition website, “Chains or snow tires are required from 3.6 miles east of the
Humboldt/Trinity County line to 5 miles west of Platina.”

UPDATE 10:15 a.m.: Hwy 299 has reopened with one way traffic, said Phil Frisbee from Caltrans. “People need to expect 30 minute delays at the current time,” he said. “Our goal this afternoon is to get it down to 10 minute delays.”
