Woman’s Body Found After ‘Suspicous’ Fire in Fort Bragg

Press release from the Mendocino County Sheriff:

Mendocino County Sheriff's Office MCSO BlurOn 02-28-2016 at approximately 11:49 PM the Fort Bragg Fire Department was dispatched to a fire at a residence in the 16000 block of Franklin Road in Fort Bragg, California.

When fire fighters arrived they found a residence and another building on fire.  After the fires were extinguished fire fighters located the body of a deceased adult female inside the residence.

Mendocino County Sheriff Deputies responded and began an investigation into the circumstances of the fire and death of the woman.

On 03-01-2016 the adult female was identified as being Cathy Westerling (54 year-old female from Fort Bragg, California) during a forensic autopsy.

The investigation into the case of the fire is still ongoing at this time.

According to the Press Democrat, fire officials are calling this blaze “suspicious.”

  • Do they know if she was dead before the fire was started?very sad prayers to the family’s

  • The autopsy can tell if there is soot or burns in the lungs. If none, the person was not breathing when the fire burned around them.

  • Cathy Westerling was my sister and we her family had not heard from her in several years . She flew me out several times and i loved it out there it was beautiful the ocean in front of her house and the forest in her backyard.
