Pretty as a Peacock

Did you know that near Laytonville, exotic peacocks and peahens wander among the local flora and fauna as if they were a natives?

“Peafowl can naturalize and find their own food sources in the area if the chicks are protected from predators,” explained photographer Lynn Harrington. In these photos, she captures a handsome naturalized cock showing off for a hen. Will peachicks soon be the way?

When I was a kid living in the San Joaquin Valley in the early sixties, we made our beer money by stealing the peacocks from the local parks. We would stick them in the trunk and cruise the foothills pulling into random ranches. The ranch owners loved to have them around their yards and would give us twenty five dollars apiece.
The parks were overloaded with them and a few were never missed. I know. I’m going to hell.

My grandparents had some at thier house in the central valley. Also, when my friends and I would float down the kings river, we always heard peacocks screaming near Reedley.
