Officer’s Vehicle “Halfway Underwater” After Chase

Scanner BlurAn officer’s vehicle ended up underwater after a car chase in the Ferndale area.

Around 1:30 a.m., a law enforcement officer chased a vehicle as it weaved all over the roadway. At one point, the officer said the vehicle was traveling 55 to 60 MPH on Grizzly Bluff Road. Eventually, the vehicle turned onto a dead end road.

The suspect drove the vehicle into a field at the end of the road and got it stuck. But, the suspect managed to unstick it and continue driving. Then the vehicle got stuck again near the Salt River (There’s a map at the bottom of this post).

The suspect turned the vehicle’s lights off, but officers heard the engine revving in the distance. Officers tried to find a way to get to the suspect for several minutes before finding an access point.

As officers closed in on the vehicle, the suspect fled on foot. Officers searched the area and left around 4 a.m. It’s unclear if they ever caught the suspect.

In the middle of all of this, an officer disabled his vehicle by getting it stuck in the water. The officer said over the scanner, “My vehicle is halfway underwater.”

[Note: The California Highway Patrol and the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. The term officer was used to avoid mis-attributing details to the wrong agency.]

C’mon, folks, some of you please lighten up. Mistakes happen. This was funny and the poor officer will no doubt get teased but mistakes happen when you do things. Teasing should be kind-hearted not indictments of intelligence.

Its not the first time law enforcement got stuck in Ferndale water or mud. A few years back a EXPERIENCED Sheriff’s deputy got stuck in the mud covering a road on the way to a shots fired call. We have a lot of flood water and sticky silt that covers roads in the winter.

I’ve been stuck before. I expect some teasing but not a permanent judgement on my character. I hope people can lighten up a little.
