[UPDATE 4:36 p.m.] Fire Near New Navy Base Road Contained

A fire flashed across dry grass in a field near New Navy Base Road this afternoon. The blaze which began around 3 p.m. quickly swallowed several acres. Crews from Humboldt Bay Fire raced to the flames and contained them quickly. Crews are now mopping up the area.

UPDATE 4:36 p.m.: Samoa Peninsula Fire Chief Dale Unea reports in the video below that one of his volunteers initially spotted  the fire which is estimated to have burned 1and a quarter. At this point, he says, there is no known cause.
