Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a fire in a building on the 500 block of West Buhne around 4 a.m. Flames were consuming a structure next to the Asian Market when firefighters arrived on scene.

Chris Jelinek, Battalion Chief, described the situation, “We arrived at a fully involved single story car garage.” It took crews about 90 minutes from arrival to mop up. No one was injured or displaced.

“At this point, we have nothing indicating it was suspicious in nature,” Jelinek said. Crews are still investigating and they don’t yet know the cause.

UPDATE 7:50 a.m.: Press release from Humboldt Bay Fire:

Humboldt Bay Fire Department HBF EurekaOn February 8th at approximately 4:05 AM Humboldt Bay Fire responded to a reported structure fire in the 500 block of West Buhne Street. A first alarm assignment, including two fire engines, one ladder truck, one squad and two chief officers responded. Upon arrival first arriving crews observed heavy fire coming from the front and rear of a one story wood-frame detached garage. Crews arrived and quickly attacked the fire, knocking it down within 10 minutes of arrival. The garage was mainly used for storage and due to the large quantity of contents, full extinguishment took approximately 90 minutes. Occupants of the adjoining residence were awoken by the sound of the fire and escaped without injury.

The fire is under investigation, but appears to have started outside of the garage, to the back near a garbage can. The garage is a total loss, estimated value of $10,000. Fire crews extinguished the fire before it could extend to nearby residences.

Thanks for getting this story out so quick. I’m a neighbor and relieved to know there was no one hurt. It’s always way more dramatic than it appears in print.
