These Dogs Need Homes; Shelter Nearing Capacity!
Help! Some friendly dogs need homes.
The Humboldt County Animal Shelter is getting full again. That means some dogs will have to be euthanized if homes can’t be found soon.
Below is a press release from It’s a Dog Life Rescue. This organization works with the Humboldt County Animal Shelter to find homes for dogs that end up there.

If folks are going to adopt, please don’t forget that the Shelter is open longer hours:
on Tuesdays AND Thursdays from 10 am until 7 pm (back up to regular hours)!
The rest of the weekdays the shelter closes at 4 pm and requests about a half an hours to do adoption paperwork.
The shelter is closed on the weekends and unfortunately will be closed on Friday, February 12th and Monday February 15th for holidays.

I look at my two dogs and think the same thing.
The shelter hours are ridiculous. 10am-4pm on most days? Closed on weekends?!
Above there is a comment that explains that on Tuesday and Thursday the hours are from 10 am until 7 pm
Call your supervisor and complain, its a county run facility that deserves and needs help. In fact encourage everyone you know to remind the supes how valued this facility is.
These press releases happen because those folks dont just care they are literally committed to the critters. I highly recommend dropping by to see how much they do with little funding and tons of volunteers.
Because of their amazingness you can arrange to go there after hours if you’re interested in a dog. They will drop what they are doing at home if it means a chance for a home for the dog. Amazing truly above and beyond.

Thank you for putting faces to the numbers. It’s one thing to say “x” number of dogs will be euthanized… quite another to see their faces. I hope this works.
We must be kinder to our dogs by making a life-long commitment to the dogs we have and not letting them breed indiscriminately.
The Shelter is open on Wednesdays from 10 am to 4 pm.
So that means the normal Shelter hours are:
Monday through Friday from 10 am to 4 pm with extended hours on Tuesdays and Thursdays until 7 pm.
The only days the Shelter is closed is on weekends and holidays.
Hope this clarifies things!
While looking at these beautiful creatures, and thinking about how it would work to have a resident dog here, I followed the links and noticed the “Warning Label” on the three high-lighted dogs: None of them can have access to domesticated animals. (The same warning applies to wild life, I’m sure.)
So it’s critical for potential pet-shoppers to know that these beautiful dogs will have to be confined or under direct and constant control for the duration of their lives; and that the liabilities for failure to provide such a home are huge. That may be why they’ve been abandoned in the first place.
I hope such homes appear for these dogs before their time runs out, and I thank you for your dedication to critters everywhere, and Kym for passing the Word. af
You are so right AF. It is nice to be able to find such solid advise. More than an up vote.
Im concerned that when pot goes fully legal in ca and the bottom falls out of weed. the growers and trimmers will shuffle off to where they came from and abandon their grow /guard dogs, mark my words the pound will be overrun with pit bulls.
That happens now. And sometimes they are left chained. And it’s ghastly. af
Part of the problem are the rules around “surrendering” pets.
And there are many working class folks who have had to give up their pets as they cant afford them.
Most growers I know love their critter and having them protect is just a side benefit. Exceptions exist of course.
Our other local shelters bring in dogs from the city that are going to be put down so maybe a few less imports to free up the space so some dogs that are already here can have some more time before they killed.

If the shelters ever replied to applicants they would probably adopt more. I applied December 2nd to get a dog for my family as a surprise for christmas. They called back January 25th asking if we were still interested it’s no wonder they are not adopting. By then of course I found a dog on craigslist for sell.
Please pass the word that starting at 4:15 pm on February 9 until February 11 at 7 pm – ALL dogs are adoptable for $50.00!
(Senior days remain adoptable for $35.00 :O)
So that means discounted pricing is in effect for all dog on:
Tuesday February 9, 2016 from 4:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Wednesday, February 10, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and
Thursday, February 11, 2016 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The shelter is closed for holidays and the weekend on February 12 – 15 and so the discounted adoption fees are hoped to decrease the adoptable dog population (currently at 25) before this long weekend.
Great deal as all dogs are neutered or spayed, microchipped, and up to date on basic shots!!

The Humboldt County Shelter is in McKinleyville and there is not waiting lists to adopt dogs. Dogs are adopted on a first come first serve basis. The only waiting would be for landlord approval or for a dog to be neutered or spayed.
