[UPDATE 2:27 P.M.] Coroner Responding to a Death in Petrolia; Hazmat Situation

The Humboldt County Coroner’s Office has been called to the Lighthouse Road area of Petrolia following the discovery of a body in the area this morning. A Petrolia Fire spokesperson could only confirm that the Coroner had been called and that there was a Hazmat situation.

A Hazmat situation indicates a place where hazardous materials that may cause harm or death to an individual are be found.

At 12:20 p.m according to a resident of the area, a Hazmat team has not yet arrived on the scene.

Spokespersons for the Sheriff’s Office and the Coroner’s Office were unavailable to answer questions at this time.

UPDATE 2:27 p.m.: We have an update on the situation from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office.

An adult male was found deceased in a vehicle in the Lighthouse Road area not far from Petrolia, said Selena Zorrilla-Mendoza, a Community Service Officer with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The cause is under investigation at this time.

“We’re determining the cause of death,” she said. “Unknown chemicals were found in the car which is why Hazmat was called out.”
