In storms like those impacting our area today, roadways can be unexpectedly flooded, trees can be down, or a slide could have covered part of the highway. Please drive carefully. [Photo from earlier this month provided by Caltrans.]

NEW POST WITH THE LATEST ON ROADS AND RIVERS. JUST CLICK HERE.

Original post: With rain still pounding down and a winter weather watch beginning at 4 p.m., the highways continue to suffer damage. The weather is impacting rivers as well as roads. The Humboldt County Office of Emergency Services said that both the Eel River at Ferndale and the Van Duzen at Bridgeville are expected to reach monitor stages.

Down below we’ve got the latest on major roads through and out of our area as well updates on Humboldt County Roads. We’ll keep the post as up-to-date as possible so you can check in as needed.

Rivers:

  • Mad River near Arcata has crested and is receeding.

State Highways:

Hwy 299: There are two major slides on Hwy 299.

  • One is near Big Bar in Trinity County. It closed the highway last week. The slide is active and Caltrans has one-way controlled traffic on it.
  • The second is east of Douglas City in Trinity County. A slide closed the highway yesterday and it is now only open to one-way controlled traffic.

Hwy 271:  Closed due to slipout at the end of Dimmick Road to near the Piercy Community Center.

Hwy 101: Two incidents:

Hwy 96: Approximately three miles south of Hoopa has been closed due to a landslide. There is no estimated time of reopening. (Take a look at this video of the slide...Trees crumple across the road. It’s VERY active.)

Hwy 1: One lane traffic, one mile west of Hwy 101.

Crikey! I was driving on the road that is now the new sinkhole in Harbor/Brookings not much more than a week ago! The sinkhole in the restaurant parking lot itself has been there for weeks, closing the southbound slow lane of 101 only.

That’s a pretty busy stretch right there and the detour is going to be NO fun.
