This is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Preliminary investigations revealed the cause of the explosion and fire was related to a butane honey oil hash extraction lab operation (BHO), which was taking place at the residence. DTF Agents served a search warrant and located a tank which held 100 lbs of butane, which was being used in the production of the BHO, a semi-automatic shotgun, 20 lbs of concentrated cannabis (BHO), 60 lbs of marijuana shake, 5 lbs of dried marijuana bud, digital scales, a commercial grade vacuum oven, and 117 growing marijuana plants.

Agents determined through interviews and physical evidence, that the cause of the explosion was likely a gas leak which caused butane to leak into the residence and ignite when a vacuum pump turned on. The gas leak was likely caused by failing of a weld on the equipment from the BHO production. The male subject attempted to mitigate the leak, but was unsuccessful. The primary resident was out of town at the time of the incident.

Criminal charges are expected and the investigation is ongoing.

Peabrain: nobody would have to get their cannabis on the black market if it was legal. You could go to the store and get what you want from a well regulated and taxed industry.

If it became legal these tanks n production could reside in a industrial zone safe away from neighborhoods & can be regulated for safty. Keep it illegal & this will continue, as long as BHO has a demand & a high black market value. Your sarcasm & belief keeps our residental neighborhood’s unsafe.

When will the EPA step in? How much butane is being released into the ozone layer that will never be recovered?

Note on the EPA: If it actually was an Environmental Protection Agency, the folks of Flint Michigan and their children would not be brain damaged. Check it out and call for the firing of the Midwest Director, EPA (for openers.)
Her resignation is effective Feb 1, but you might consider joining the chorus. Speak up to the White House at 202-456-1111.
Closer to home, if the entire city of Flint can be blown off for a YEAR of poisoned water, how big a kerfluffle do you think hash in CA will stir? Answer: None.

Neither of these topics are morally right. I could also bring up the methane leaks in LA. BUT that would only get this conversation more off topic. So let’s stick to the butane discussion, shall we? California has very strict emissions laws. Of course air pollution is worse in SoCal. But why not protect our clean air in Humboldt instead of aiding in polluting it. Do I agree with what happened in Flint? No. But as a citizen of California I would much rather focus on issues here.

Why can’t people be happy smoking pot? Pot is great. It doesn’t need to be concentrated. Just smoke a bong. Or a joint. Or maybe a pipe is your thing. Put it in a cookie. BHO process leaves trace amounts of butane in the product even if made by an expert. Do you think this guy was an expert?

My thoughts exactly. Buds rule! BHO is for fools! In this case a fool who blew up part of a house that I assume wasn’t owned by him.

If you think legalizing weed will make this all go away, you’re a fool. The black market will still exist because of pricing and the BHO production will stay a cottage industry, with exploding cottages still happening.

I’ve been assuming that the only attraction of concentrates is the reduced bulk of the product, rendering it more easily concealed. If legalization negates the need for concealment, will the need to concentrate the product still exist? af
