[UPDATE 1 p.m.: Road Open] All Northbound Lanes Blocked on Hwy 101 Near Loleta, ‘Active Slide’ and Multiple Accidents

Breaking news: Details are unclear at this point but the California Highway Patrol Incident page is saying that a vehicle hit a slide on Hwy 101 near the north Loleta Drive offramp. There have been multiple accidents and both northbound Hwy 101 lanes are blocked. But some emergency vehicles are having to access from the south and are driving northbound in the southbound lanes.

The Incident page says a mother and baby appear to be trapped and a request for Jaws of Life has gone out over the scanner.

“Check out the slide…It is active at this time,” reports one of the men at the scene.

UPDATE 7:01 a.m.:  “This has not affected the southbound lanes of the Hwy just the northbound sides,” says a report from the scene. There are over 10 emergency vehicles at the scene and one person at least is still being extracted from their vehicle.

UPDATE 7:03 a.m.: “We are looking at a long-term closure,” reports Dispatch.

UPDATE 7:06 a.m.: “All patients extricated at this time,” reports Dispatch.

UPDATE 8:02 a.m.: Confirmed with a California Highway Patrol spokesperson that ONLY the northbound lanes are closed. Traffic is being diverted off those lanes of the highway according to the Incident page.

UPDATE 8:40 a.m.: The CHP is listing this incident now as minor injuries only. (Yay!)

UPDATE 9:13 a.m.: Caltrans posted on their Facebook page. They stated, “Highway 101 northbound is closed due to a small slide. Crews are working to clean up debris and re-open the road. Traffic being detoured onto Singley Hill Road.”

UPDATE 9:20 a.m.: The CHP Incident page estimates that it will be about 11 a.m. before the road is opened.

UPDATE 9:41 a.m.: The traffic is moving slowly but safely on the Singley Road offramp.

UPDATE 10 a.m.: Another photo from Caltrans showing the slide and the heavy equipment operator working to clear it.

UPDATE 1 p.m.: Both northbound lanes are now cleared and Hwy 101 is open.

I’m wondering if this area is where the burn was on the hillside along that stretch of highway. Can’t remember how ago the fire was, but that general area anyway.

Some relatives just passed through there. This is right near the Casino. N/B traffic is being rerouted into and through loleta.

welcome to EL NINO
and we are at the start of el nino which started a couple weeks ago
nov. and dec. rains were regular fall / winter storms , now the storms are coming from hawaii and are warmer and lots wetter . wondering what the roads will be like after a couple months of this kind of rain

Flood Warning indicates a flood stage similar to January 1966. Good thing most of what fell in the last few storms was rain that melted away most of the earlier snow we got up in the higher elevations…
