[UPDATE: Good News!] Shelter Overcrowded: These Dogs Set to Die Tomorrow If Someone Can’t Help

UPDATE Below:

There are dogs in this area slated to die on Friday if someone can’t adopt or foster them. The Humboldt County Animal Shelter is at maximum capacity. The Friends of the Shelter Facebook page states that the situation is “Critical!” Then it urges, “If anyone you know is considering adopting, now would be a really good time.”

Tammy Falor of “It’s a Dog’s Life Rescue,” a group that is devoted to saving animals slated for euthanasia here in Humboldt, said that “dogs keep coming in to the shelter every day.” But, she says, the shelter is already full.

“The Shelter’s euthanasia rate is incredibly low for a kill shelter,” explains Falor’s Group’s Facebook page. However, at times like these when the shelter is full with dogs that must be legally held a certain amount of time, then dogs who are past their legal hold date are scheduled for euthanasia. Once that happens, she says, volunteer groups like hers have to scramble to find homes willing to foster or adopt the unlucky ones.

12549070_962356810501653_8678043478937345483_n

For instance, this Siberian Husky female will be euthanized tomorrow if a foster home is not found for her. The hope is to get her to a sled dog rescue but first she needs to have a “soreness in her hindquarters checked out” by a vet. And, time is needed to make those arrangements.

Capture

These two black labs also will die tomorrow if a suitable foster home isn’t found. Malt and Stout have already been accepted at an out of state rescue once they are neutered. But a place is needed to keep them until they can go through the procedure and be sent on.

There are more dogs shown here that are also on the list. If you can foster or adopt send an email to [email protected]m or [email protected]. Even if one of these handsome canines isn’t what you are looking for, check out the Humboldt Animal Shelter for more options. Any dog you can bring home, frees up space for another.

UPDATE 1/15: No dogs will be euthanized today at the shelter. It’s a Dog’s Life Rescue Facebook page states,
These dogs will continue living today because of all the out pouring of support for the dogs – from offers to foster to adopt, offers to foster, 3 owners collecting their dogs and folks adopting 5 dogs yesterday! All of the people who work with Humboldt County Shelter dogs from volunteers, rescued and staff owe the dog loving community a debt of gratitude for stepping up and making it possible to save these dogs! THANK YOU!

Just FYI, in the state of CA, all you need is a letter from your doctor and they can’t say no, charge you pet rent or a higher deposit. The letter just has to state that you have a disability (it does not need to say what disability…it could even be anxiety or depression) and that having a companion animal would allow you the equal opportunity to use and enjoy your house or apartment just like everyone else. I’m a landlord. With that letter, they either allow your dog or they open themselves up to a huge lawsuit. The law takes the ADA seriously.

Careful. It’s a bit more than just getting a letter from a doctor. You don’t get to invent a disability in order to get a free pet. That’s dishonest (and probably illegal) and a landlord can call you out on it. You don’t get to rework a lease and tell your landlord to deal with it just because you decided to save a critter. That and these animals are going to be put down TOMORROW, not next month.

Gentle Readers: For good information about the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) and how it applies to service, emotional support, and therapy animals , I suggest you read the thorough information at:
http://www.freemypaws.com

You will see a simple chart explaining the difference between Service Animals, Emotional Support Animals, and THerapy Animals. Note well that Emotional Support Animals ARE exempt from “no pets” policies in housing.

You don’t need to buy the “stuff” that this website is selling. The information they offer is clear, well-organized, and accurate.

IF you are well-informed, and qualify medically, this information may well make it possible to live with your animals. Do remember that your medical information is quite confidential (HIPPA) and you are NOT obliged to share you diagnosis nor medical condition details with your landlord; this is a matter between you and your health care provider.

Good luck.

I’m with you you can always send them to another shelter. You don’t need to euthanize them that’s just heartless and so totally wrong. Why doesn’t someone at the shelter take them home until you can find them somewhere to be and I want to know WHY THE FUCK THERE IS STILL KILL SHELTERS OUT THERE? It should be illegal to be a kill shelter where the hell is your heart you don’t have to kill these dogs there is ALWAYS another way. Come on people there has to be a few people out there who can take these dogs or foster them for awhile don’t let these HEARTLESS ASSES kill them

Monique how much of your income goes to supporting care and food for these dogs? How much time to do spend working with rescues and on alternative outcomes for these animals? The shelter excepts volunteers and has a team of people who coordinate the hundreds of rescues they work with. This shelter (Humboldt County Animal Shelter) has the lowest euthanasia of any kill shelter in the USA. When your willing to take “responsibility” (new word here!) for the lives of those animals that people allowed to be born then discarded, you will have contributed to the answer and not just a mouth piece for the lazy. You must work your body as apposed to just your mouth. You get more done. And BTW that person there does not represent the the Humboldt County Shelter in anyway.

I’ll foster the black labs……….will call redwood pals after 10am. I’ve never fostered before, but I have a big yard and stuff, and I will not stand for them to be killed. No, I won’t allow that.

They would not have this problem, if they loosened up on their adoption rules. Its like asking for a Human child. They make it so difficult. Get real at this place of business. If you kill the dog, its blood will be on your hands.

It may seem ridiculous but those rules are put in place for many unfortunate reasons; some dogs are taken home and then nit cared for&abused. Many people try to sneak dogs into rentals with no pets allowed, then the landlord finds out and dog I’d either returned to shelter or abandoned. Having to go back to the shelter is heartbreaking, poor dogs think they did something wrong.
The rules are based on years of problems.
We are incredibly lucky to have such a caring shelter. In LA the kill shelters have gas chambers for putting down 10 or so dogs at once. I read about a dog who survived the gas chamber and was then adopted by a family, I believe that dog rode a rose parade float in 2015.

You’ll be happy to hear that it is illegal to euthanize dogs in gas chambers in California, and has been for many years. I remember the dog you speak of and his (thankfully unsuccessful) euthanasia happened in another state. Here’s a map of states that still use this cruel outdated technology. http://www.animalsheltering.org/page/eliminating-gas-chambers

Do you want the dog beaten or mistreated ?? Laws are for the good of the animals as well as the adopter. They make sure you have the means to take care of the animal. It’s all in the best interest of the animal, but they shouldn’t put them down because of space

Adopting a dog from the Shelter is incredibly easy. Helping out a rescue dog is more entailing. Maybe you should try to adopt a dog directly from the shelter. That will help the overcrowding and get you a best friend!

I hear you, but I’ve seen the result of low (or no) adoption fees: the dogs are ‘bought’ and sold at 3X the price to medical/teaching institutions and used for the cruelest, most inhumane and unforgivable experiments any of us would EVER wish on another.
UCLA in SF was my neighbor. Walking to the bus stop at 6am, dogs barking; walking home at 3pm, no barking. So I checked it out. Now I’m a proud member of PETA, I understand the kindness of death, and I have no regrets.

who knows, maybe if a certain place in Mckinleyville wasn’t cherry picking dogs (puppies and dogs without health issues) from Los Angeles’ shelters and bringing them north- local dogs that need a home would have less competition and perhaps a better outlook on the future.

Sorry about the delay in getting updated information about the dogs on the euth list. The compressed time frame within which rescues were given notice (Wednesday for a Friday deadline which was driven by the numbers of dogs coming into the Shelter) and the heartwarming response to the plea for foster homes has created some logistics challenges – that combined with non-rescue employment of rescuers getting in the way – is making responses to offers for fostering delayed :O)

The Shelter is open until 7 pm tonight and so we have more time to see if potential foster homes are matches. We can say that there has been interest expressed for every dog on the list! Paws so totally crossed that a perfect match will be found for every dog on the list. We are very hopeful thanks to our caring community!

PLUS – some owned dogs have left the shelter back to their owners leaving open kennels and so the SHELTER IS WORKING WITH RESCUES TO GIVE A BIT MORE TIME TO MANEUVER!! NO DOGS ON THE LIST WILL BE EUTHANIZE TOMORROW – giving time to sort things out!

One more dog was added to the list of dogs at risk – an English Bulldog / Pit mixed male – blue in color, around 3 years old. This reprieve allows us to check out this boys issues and look for a foster home for him as well.

Do they have a place to go? I would be willing to help or hold the husky until it’s adopted by the person in Oregon. When are the labs getting fixed. I would be happy to help keep them safe until they are transfered.

There are many people to thank for helping our furry kin, but I have to say that until I volunteered at the shelter I was not aware of just how amazing Mara & Jim are!!!! They give so very much to the animals and the community both at the shelter and their homes, they define the word commitment, & are passing it on to the awesome volunteers at the shelter.
If you have a chance stop by and thank them, donations for the critters in the kennels are always appreciated.

Our chocolate lab passed away 2 months ago. A tumor on her liver burst and 2 days later she passed away. We weren’t going to get another dog till our vet bill was all paid but maybe we’re bound to take one of your lab mix shown above. I really have a great feeling about the black lab thats laying down.

Same here about the black lab that’s laying down, looks like a hunter. Actually both of them. The second lab reminds me of our first Lab , He would take care his business in our spare shower ,very convenient.
There is no better dog than a Lab.

I went to the shelter in Eureka, paid $100.00 for the right to rescue. Never got a dog, never got my money back. I even live on 60 acres with cows and a goat, plus two old 14 years plus dogs. for the life of me,I could not get a dog. When I presented the $100.00 coupon good for one dog. They said they did not have any available. My thinking was they wanted me to kick down extra bucks. So are they really concerned about dogs ? or just lining their pockets.

Which shelter are you referring to tugboat?
The county shelter is in McKinleyville and I believe its the sequoia animal shelter thats just south of eureka *please kym or readers correct me if i’m wrong*

There are often big ranch dogs that come into the county shelter, like great Pyrenees, who live with the livestock. Obviously its not good for the people or the dog for it to be a “housedog”, I would bet that if you are interested in bigger dogs you could leave your contact info with the shelter folks. They often have discount days too.

That gets a WHOOO HOOO THANK YOU TO ALL!

Tomorrow we hope to get a better picture and more information about the remaining dog on the postponed euth list – Blue Boy – a Male Blue in color English Bulldog and Pit Bull Terrier 3 years old.

Unfortunately there will be 4 Border Collie mixes added to dogs in need of foster homes – 2 are 5 month old (1 male and 1 female) and 2 adult males – 2 years old. We will give Kym more information about these dogs tomorrow after their bath day :O)

So please stay tuned – this is proving to be a fast paced time for Shelter dogs!

Thank you Kym for following the Shelter dogs’ stories closely and thank all of you readers for caring, spreading the work, and offering to open your homes to Shelter dogs.

And a special thank you to all the rescuers – especially Redwood Pals Rescue – and the Shelter staff who put aside personal business and livelihoods, and/or stepped up to intense work days at the Shelter so these dogs may live!

Blue Boy has left the Shelter on all 4 paws thanks to Redwood Pals Rescue!!

The two young Border Collies are safely in rescue, but the two adult males, Enzil and Puppy, It’s a Dog’s Life Rescue is trying to get them out of all 4 paws. Enzil and Puppy need homes where there is no access to goats, and secure fencing. Email [email protected] for more information about Enzil and Puppy!

Also on the list is the wandering shy girl, Sunny who was spotted from Samoa to Trinidad before she was captured and taken to the Shelter. Sunny needs a foster home with a very secure house and yard so she can stay safe while she again learns to trust people. Email [email protected] for more information about Sunny.

A large group of dogs hit the shelter and so if anyone is missing their dog, please check out the dogs in the Shelter to see if their dog ended up at the Shelter!
