Escaped Inmate Captured on State Route 96

This is a press release from the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and any individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:

Fidler, Danny (1)On Tuesday, December 29, 2015, at about 9:10 a.m. Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies arrested California State Prison escapee Daniel R. Fidler, 42, on SR 96 west of SR 263 (Mile Post Marker 100.69).

Earlier in the morning the SCSO Dispatch Center received a call from a citizen reporting a man matching the escapee’s description was a passenger in a pick-up traveling from the Horse Creek area to Redding.

Deputies Joe Hopper, Rich Ortiz, and Sheriff Lopey observed the vehicle and made a felony stop. The driver of the vehicle and Mr. Fidler surrendered without incident and both were taken into custody. Fidler was positively identified by tattoos and a photo. Fidler admitted being the escaped inmate.

Fidler escaped from Deadwood Conservation Camp #23 (Fort Jones area) on December 26, 2015, prior to 8:30 p.m. when he turned up missing after a routine headcount at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) facility. Fidler was suspected in the theft of a flatbed truck on a ranch in the Fort Jones area, which was taken shortly after his escape. The truck was found abandoned in the vicinity of Horse Creek on December 27th around 9:00 a.m. near SR 96.

An investigation revealed that Fidler was picked up by a resident of Horse Creek after he was observed on a nearby road exposed to the cold weather conditions. Fidler was provided shelter and food at a nearby Horse Creek residence and the investigation revealed the occupants did not know he was an escaped convict.

The owner and driver of the pick-up that contained the escaped inmate was an active military member who suspected he was the escapee after the man checked the SCSO website at his parent’s home, the location where he was temporarily provided shelter. CDCR, CHP, and additional SCSO units responded and assisted at the arrest scene.

A joint operation conducted by the SCSO deputies, detectives, and CDCR Special Services Unit agents was initiated during the early morning hours of December 29th in an effort to canvass the Horse Creek area. All federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies were notified and were actively searching for Fidler.

According to Sheriff Lopey, “This was a good team effort on the part of SCSO Dispatch, deputies, detectives, California Highway Patrol and CDCR Special Services Unit agents, and citizens, which resulted in the safe and successful apprehension of an escaped state prison inmate. I wanted to thank the other federal, state, and local agencies that assisted in the on-going search effort and the news media did a good job getting Fidler’s description out to our citizens. We also appreciate the report we received from local residents after they discovered they were assisting an escaped inmate and the efforts of the young serviceman to remove Fidler from the Horse Creek area in an apparent attempt to protect his parents and other residents there was commendable as well.”

Fidler was booked at the Siskiyou County Jail in Yreka for felony escape and auto theft charges by the arresting SCSO deputy. He will be transferred to the custody of CDCR investigators for transfer to a state prison facility in the near future.

Any citizen with any additional information about Mr. Fidler’s activities between December 26th and 29th is urged to contact the SCSO Dispatch Center at (530) 841-2900.

Not very good camping out weather right now. Anyone thinking they could hike back to Humboldt at this time of year without someone picking them up has some poor survival skills.

Nah, they’ll let him back to labor camp. He did a great job getting them overtime at Christmas, so they like him. He’ll get the nod to run up a bill on another holiday, watch and see.
