Sheriff’s Office Highlights Measure Z’s Impact

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office releases information on the promotions and new hires that occurred in their department as the result of Measure Z, the 1/2 percent sales tax increase County residents voted for in November of 2014.

Press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office:

Sheriff Downey is pleased to announce the swearing in of two new Humboldt County Correctional Deputies, and two new Deputy Sheriff Recruits. The two new Correctional Deputies are Arthur Johnson and Jordan Checots. Both are residents of Eureka. The two new Deputy Sheriff Recruits are Brandon Head and Foy Melendy. Head is currently enrolled in the College of the Redwoods Police Academy and Melendy will attend the upcoming Police Academy in January 2016.

Sheriff Downey promoted a Lieutenant and Captain as well. Sergeant Bryan Quenell was promoted to Lieutenant, and Lieutenant Kym Thompson was promoted to Captain. Lt. Quenell has been with the Sheriff’s Office for almost 19 years, and Capt. Thompson has been with office for 21 years.

These new hires would not be possible without the passing of Measure Z. The Sheriff would like to thank the community for their continued support and is committed to providing competent, effective, and responsive public services to the citizens of Humboldt County.

If you have any questions about the current job openings please contact Human Resources at (707) 476-2349 or visit their website www.humboldtgov.org/317/human-resources. Multiple open positions are made possible through funding from Measure Z.

Your kidding right? Downey says he “is committed to providing competent, effective, and responsive public services to the citizens of Humboldt County” Really? Can’t prove that statement by the service they are providing to the citizens. Why so many promotions when there is no man power on the streets. All this heavy upper management (which requires higher pay) and no more man power on the streets? Who are they supervising? Lets wait till we have more boots in the field before we put more in the office. If the communities can wait for the deputies to be trained then the promotions can wait until they are on the streets. There are still too many days when there are no deputies in the So Hum area. Nothing has changed in the So Hum area since the politicians came to town and complained the only way to get more deputies was to give more taxes. You got your money, now give us our deputies. We have seen more promotions than we have seen deputies hired. Downey was quick to demand extra money when the Coroner posistion was merged with the Sheriff’s Office. Money for him not the department. He claimed there was no money for new deputies. Promotions take more money that could be used for more deputies. Come on Downey, get your priorities straight. For once think about the communities and what you can do for them.

He forgot to mention the raises that were dished out. Must have slipped his mind, I guess….

Dunno, Americans don’t wear uniforms- the pictures look like a North Korean decoration day. Has he sworn to uphold North Korea’s constitution?

Gangsters come in all shapes and sizes.

A good chunk of that measure Z money went to county roads, my under standing more than enough for three full time deputies. Public safety?
