Be Careful on Highways as Storm Continues to Buffet Area, Multiple Small Slides

Thursday night a storm continues to pummel Northwestern California. Although the powerful winds that knocked down power lines and trees from Whitethorn to Willow Creek have died down, there have been numerous reports of slides and roadside flooding.

A tree split in half this morning at the corner of McCullens and Iowa in Eureka. Photographer and local resident Laurie Jensen tells us that it is over 60 years old.

As of 7:45 p.m., the California Highway Patrol Incident page had reports of a slide on State Route 299 and another on the Avenue of the Giants north of Phillipsville. Orleans resident Angela McLaughlin tells us that there are four slides on Hwy 299 from Berry Summit down through Willow Creek onto Highway 96 going to Hoopa. She described “dodging” her way through the area.

If you have to drive in this weather, please be careful as there have been a number of accidents.
