Two Die After Crash Into Trinity River

chpstarA man and a woman died today when a Ford van went off State Route 299 into the Trinity River. According to the California Highway Patrol, the van was traveling westbound on 299 when for unknown reasons the male driver allowed the van to “travel onto the north shoulder” of the roadway.

The driver appears to have tried to correct the vehicle and lost control. According to the CHP, the van “traveled across both lanes of State Route 299, exiting the roadway and onto the south shoulder and off a steep embankment which bordered the south shoulder.” The van landed in approximately five feet of water.

The van was spotted and reported about 9:30 this morning. Both  of the occupants succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The Trinity County Coroner has not yet released the names of the victims.

I am the person who came up on the accident at around 9:15 this morning… I had my son with me and thought at first that it was just a rock and that is what my son thought as well but something told me to pull over I had a real weird feeling about it… When I pulled over I saw the van as well as the gentleman hanging out the windshield…

Is this the same accident that LostCoast is reporting? The timing and amount of people dont seem to match up. Either way, very sad.

To me my gut feeling is, God talking to me, he’s nudging me, as strong as our gut feelings are I often ignore them. I don’t know why I do that, maybe it’s denial, I don’t know, but more and more situations I am aware of how powerful my (gut) intuition is and when I think it’s God talking to me, then there is no denial. May God bless the victims and their families, wrapping his powerful & healing arms around them through this difficult time.

We just pulled the bumper shroud from their van from our beach. The crash was just upriver from my home.

This kind of crash is very common on 299. The driver allows the vehicle to drift of the pavement on the right. When the tires hit soft/no shoulder the driver reacts by pulling hard to left. The vehicles subsequently veers hard left and off the otherside. Even driving slowly on 299 (45 mph) puts a driver in a high speed maneuver when this happens. Constant vigilance and good tires are necessary for safely driving 299.
