Two Die After Crash Into Trinity River
A man and a woman died today when a Ford van went off State Route 299 into the Trinity River. According to the California Highway Patrol, the van was traveling westbound on 299 when for unknown reasons the male driver allowed the van to “travel onto the north shoulder” of the roadway.
The driver appears to have tried to correct the vehicle and lost control. According to the CHP, the van “traveled across both lanes of State Route 299, exiting the roadway and onto the south shoulder and off a steep embankment which bordered the south shoulder.” The van landed in approximately five feet of water.
The van was spotted and reported about 9:30 this morning. Both of the occupants succumbed to their injuries at the scene. The Trinity County Coroner has not yet released the names of the victims.
