[UPDATE 12:15 a.m.] Men Attacked by Dog, Air Ambulance Requested

A little before 11 p.m. Saturday night, emergency services were told that two men were attacked by a dog in the Nob Hill area of Shelter Cove. An air ambulance was requested by medical but the service declined due to cloudy weather in the area.

Humboldt County Sheriff’s deputies are on their way from Eureka but as of approximately 11:35 p.m. they were only a little south of Weott. It should take at least another hour for the deputies to get from Weott to Shelter Cove. Some nights there are no deputies stationed in Southern Humboldt. This appears to be one of those nights.

UPDATE 12:15 a.m.: The two victims are being transported to Redwood Memorial Hospital. The deputy who was en route now is turning back to Redwood Memorial Hospital to gather information on what occurred.

What’s missing from this story is what happened to the dog and why the sheriff’s department is 1) possibly allowing a life-threatening danger to remain in the Shelter Cove community and 2) why the deputy needs to turn back from Weott to get information when they already have deputies in Eureka, short staffed or not. 3) why is there no deputy stationed in So Hum on a Saturday night, when it’s needed the most. Love a further update on this.

There is no excuse for not having any deputy’s stationed in garberville, they got funding and hired two new deputy’s ,train the new ones up north and man this station with two veterans, there are plenty enough problems in the garberville and surrounding areas to justify it.

Sounds like a job and inquiry for the Grand Jury to me.
No matter the circumstances, there should be a deputy in So Hum. The Sheriff got a great deal of Measure Z funds.
That was a huge rallying point on their behalf.
What is up with that?

There should be a deputy in So Hum! Plus a jail/drunk tank 24/7. Also why not a Video court system?

The people who headed up the Measure originally targeted the revenue for only the Sheriff and Fire Agencies. Then, when all the other County Departments got a whiff of more padding for all THEIR fiefdoms, the Measure was changed to include ALL the other departments.
What the public was told was that a tax levied exclusively for Fire and Sheriff would not pass. (The old back-room crystal ball made that determination.)
The results were predictable; so many departments were included that the result has produced nothing, really, that the voters wanted and thought they were approving.
County Governments are as prone to pork as every other level. af

What happened to the dog? The dog should be put down. A dog that tries to KILL someone will try again. Dogs that harm humans have no place in human society.

Why are you getting all worked up over the Sheriff’s Dept. when it was an ambulance that was requested by the citizens who called and never arrived? Medical help appears to be what was needed first and foremost, not guns and handcuffs.

I thought there was a resident sheriff in shelter Cove. I guess that was years ago.

The cove wanted the resident removed , The new tax money went to the prosecutors office and to give raises and hire a couple of deputy’s . Most of the tax money went to the prosecutors office for hundreds of thousands of dollars for salaries . Hamilton the resident sheriff was run out of shelter cove .Voted out buy the community . A local fire fighter and community hero told me the Sheriff stopped answering calls before the tax vote to push therir law enforcement tax advantage . The drug task force also was funded completely

We need a air ambulance pick up site on top of the hill, and out of the fog line. It’s foggy alot at the airport.

Back around 2000 an air ambulance outfit from Redding set up a presentation to the folks in the cove. They sent a fixed wing over but were not able to find a hole in the cloud deck at the cove and were forced to land at G’ville. I drove them out to the meeting. They proposed setting up a chopper LZ up on top where Kings Peak road starts north and offered to provide the fire/rescue crew with a portable lighting system to facilitate night landings. Don’t know what happened with that.

Landing on paradise ridge has been done when needed . Night time landings are done with very little lights .Lights blind the pilots . They have landed in my field on the other side of the hill more than once to take out an injured firefighter. Injuries must have not been life threatening

The coast guard routinely lands there . The airstrip wasn’t even that foggy last night . They could have easily landed . I could see the moon and stars at sea level last night here in the cove .

The dog was controlled! In a fenced yard! The men jumped into the dogs fence to do mischief! Once again dogs get blamed for being a dog! If a stranger goes into a dogs home or fence uninvited they are probably going to get bit!

That’s why I mind my own business cause I am a risk analyst and you are hardly ever coming to the defense of Sister Theresa. Why not let the people handle who are trained to do so, armed with tasers, pepper spray, and firearms. There was mention of this being on ongoing abuse situation so there should have been plenty of time to report it.

sheet man, i live in lovely loleta. everyone here knows after calling 911 it will take a cop 20 min’s to get to get here.
in a case of someone getting a beating or a dog tearing off someone’s leg – a great deal of damage can be done in less than 5 min’s.
by the time a deputy arrives the person will be beaten or eaten to a pulp and need the coroner.

BUT, the person who gave the beating should be really spent after beating someone for 5 min’s, and the cops might more easily subdue them…if necessary.
OR,
maybe the lo will just assist the neighborhood hide the body…

THAT BEING SAID
when i listen to the scanner, lately there are many times i hear of a sheriff’s squad in the renner gas station area of the road by the creamery.
lo get called to go “up the hill” for some casino annoyance often. yeeHAW!

The fact that no sheriff was nearby is shameful. The voters passed increased sales tax for more law enforcement. So WTF? Where’s Estelle’s explanation?

i have learned at this point of my life that if i did not see “it” with my own beautiful brown eyes
then it did not happen.
and even when i see something with these big browns i still wonder – what it is i am seeing? personal and spacial perspective come into play.

Where have you guys been? This has been standard practice for the Humboldt Sheriff’s Office for some time now. There has been many times when there has been no deputy in So Hum. Politics as always….come to town meeting cry “no money…need more taxes”, get citizens all worked up about their safety and get them to pay more taxes claiming only way to solve problem. Now it’s time to provide those fixes that were promised and we hear nothing but excuses. Nothing has changed except that the county has more of our money. Estelle and Downey have shown that they do not care about So Hum, they are politicians. Downey sure didn’t turn down extra money to line his pockets when the Sheriff’s Office was given the Coroner’s duties, even though it didn’t really require any extra work on his part. How many times has Downey promised McKinleyville and Hoppa more deputies? When is he going to quit making promises and show action. The Humboldt County Sheriff Office is a joke. They want higher pay but how can you feel for them when the administration is too top heavy of “good ole boys’ and no “working boys”. Get them out of the office and on the streets.

I live in the cove and I’m friends with the girl that gets beat. This tatooed faced man has almost killed her several times. She has never called the cops on him. She got away from him and moved out but he hunts her down and stalks her. I hope the 2 men that went to confront him are ok.. if he ever comes to my house to stalk her while she’s here, I will use my constitutional gun rights! Step one foot in my door amd he’s done…..
