A white Toyota 4Runner has wiped out a stop sign and, at least temporarily,  the water supply to the town of Orleans… According to locals, town residents lost water following an accident at approximately 8:22 p.m. The California Highway Patrol Incident page states that the vehicle was “on top of the fire hydrant.”

An attempt to call the water company went unanswered and thus we have no estimate on how long the water will be off.

According to the California Highway Patrol Incident page, an ambulance was requested.

Angela McLaughlin, a local resident who provided the photo above and spoke to a local firefighter, writes,

So the white Toyota tried to make the turn from Northbound Hwy 96 onto Red Cap Rd…due to high rate of speed it lost control, broke off the fire hydrant and went down the embankment between Rob Hills n Old School house Rd…. A bystander pulled it up from over the edge back onto the road. CHP and Humboldt Sheriffs are on scene with Orleans Volunteer Fire and Orleans Water District. Drive carefully in that area they are going to have a long night…..

UPDATE 7:10 a.m.: Water is running normally, according to Orleans resident Angela McLaughlin.

    • The community without water or the driver of the Toyota that was speeding in the rain with slick tires and no license plate?

      • Lost Croat Outburst

Obviously, it’s the community as vic here of abusive, neglectful behavior by the driver. What else is news? So, Root for the community and let the driver take his/her licks with those slicks. Who is the suspect and when is the court date?

  • Looks like Orleans residents are on their own, yet again. Luckily, the town is replete with pragmatic and hard-working folks like Karuk tribal member, Angela McLaughlin. It sure would be nice, however, if the infrastructure of this town did not always have to rely on volunteers and good Samaritans.
