[UPDATE 6:56 p.m.] Breaking News: Gunshot Victim on E Street in Eureka

A woman was shot in the 1000 block of E Street in Eureka a little before six tonight, according to the scanner. Medical is staging. Chatter on the scanner describes a male suspect and a “high caliber rifle” fleeing the scene.

Local resident Anna Hamilton tells us that the fire department is staging near the 900 block.

“My neighbor said there were several shots,” Hamilton said which agrees with what the scanner reported.

Eureka Chief of Police Andrew Mills is there, says our reporter on the scene. A patient was loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.

UPDATE 6:03 p.m.: imageAccording to the scanner, a 27-year-old female was shot in the left hand and left thigh.

UPDATE 6:56 p.m.: Below we have a video. Here are the major points according to Captain Brian Stephens of the Eureka Police Department. At 5:43 p.m. multiple shots were fired in the vicinity of  Grant and E street. Later, officers learned there was a victim on E Street. They located a female with multiple gunshots wounds. She was conscious and speaking when she left the scene in an ambulance.

Steven Nicholas Upton is the suspect. He is age 26. He is a white male adult who is 5′ 10″ and 150 pounds. He has strawberry blond hair and blue eyes. He was last seen wearing a dark grey or black hooded sweatshirt and a black beanie. Upton is believed to have left running south on E Street.  He is currently wanted for attempted murder. “Anyone who has any information about his location should use extreme caution. We believe he is still armed.”

UPDATE 7:07 p.m.: Below is a mugshot of the suspect from 2013. Previous stories about Upton can be found here and here.

Wow. In a purely geographical sense this is about 5 blocks from the September shooting death and 7 or 8 blocks from the Watson st shooting death. I live very near there. My son went outside to find something in the car and I went also and we looked at the lights. I wondered what was going on. Had I known there was someone with a high-caliber rifle possibly in the bushes I would most certainly not have gone outside. In fact, if I hadn’t paid to have the internet turned back on this evening I would not know about this at all. I need to join a neighborhood watch.

Prayers for the health and recovery of the person who was shot and I hope very much that the shooter is apprehended fast.

I keep thinking its time to bring the phone tree back into our neighborhoods! Or “text” tree is more appropriate for this era I suppose.

You can have a cop for every two citizens, but if the justice system is so lax and there is no punishment, it means nothing. People mostly commit crimes because there is very little incentive not to.

Exactly! More cops, BFD. Start locking their maggot asses up. I would also say they should start putting these POS criminals to work as well. Why don’t we have more work crews that are mandatory?
