On October 26 2015, at approximately 1220 hours, Jacob Martin was driving his 1990 Buick Lesabre on the eastbound SR-299 overcrossing at US-101. Matthew Plato was driving his 2012 Volkswagen Routan on westbound SR-299 at the US-101 overcrossing. Martin failed to negotiate the roadway and allowed his vehicle to cross over the double yellow lines directly into the path of the oncoming Volkswagen. Mr. Plato attempted to avoid a collision by pulling to the right and coming to a stop, but was unable to avoid a head on collision with the Buick. The Volkswagen and the Buick came to rest blocking the eastbound and westbound lanes of SR-299 at the overcrossing of US-101. SR-299 traffic was diverted onto US-101 until the lanes were cleared at approximately 1300 hours The right front passenger of the Volkswagen and the driver of the Buick were transported by Arcata Ambulance to Mad River Hospital.
Emergency personnel from the California Highway Patrol, Arcata Fire District, and Arcata Ambulance responded to the scene.
Upon investigation it was determined Martin was under the influence. Martin was placed under arrest and booked into the Humboldt County Jail.
