I’m sure it is not my imagination. We are having a lot more violent crime than we used to – both home invasions and murders. Anyone got any stats on that?

Best to include stats state wide and across the country as well. It seems to be everywhere. Anyone tried getting a loan lately? Am not saying its right to steal and traumatize people but it seems desperation is in the air.

Also stats on whether victims knew perps, if they admitted it to cops that is. A lot of these crimes are by perps the victims know.
We have had a large influx of people into northern humboldt via HSU, around 1300 freshman I believe, with 70% from LA. Not all LA transplants are bad of course.
There seems to be a lot more pharmaceuticals & ‘designer drugs’ around the campus tho.

Have heard of a few folks getting jumped&mugged walking at nite in arcata.
Our kind and caring safe community is being taken advantage of by opportunistic jerks. At some point folks will have to fight back.
A woman I know was attacked by a drunk female ‘friend’ in her home who smashed her head into walls over&over. Someone called the cops, the attacker was still there and said she didnt remember doing it. Cops said since no weapon involved they couldn’t arrest attacker.
Not a good message to send that folks are getting away with these things. If you’re not into a personal firearm, get some pepper spray or something, its time to send a different message.

“Cops said since no weapon involved they couldn’t arrest attacker.” This is why the statistics show crime is down. Statistics are being manipulated. We both know you don’t need a weapon is be assaulted.

If you have a job, pay taxes, and pay your bills it is very easy to get a loan. If you are not doing these things, shut up you haven’t earned it!

Yes it has, nationwide. Humboldt has had issues with high suicide rates for a much longer time, there’s just been more reported suicides in the news lately. Hopefully we as a community can start talking about it more and teach others to never ignore someone asking for help and what to do when someone you love is suicidal or depressed.

My theory is the fortress theory I grew up next to a large Indian Reservation we were burglarized nearly 100 times. I developed a technique of capturing the culprits alive we would start a bonfire heat up branding irons and then begin to strip the burglar usually they break down and cry big elephant tears and miraculously we would stop getting burglarized. You got to be tough up here watch yourself I don’t ever drop my guard and I do my best to catch that first thief and make an example. I buy foreclosed homes drug houses and renovate them it’s not a business for the faint of heart.

In 1970 there were 4 violent crimes per 1,000 population and by 2014 it had dropped to 3.75, so essentially you’re safer now than in 1970. The problem with that statistic is that now there are now 115 million more people living in the U.S., so overall there are many more violent crimes per year.

Another problem is our criminal justice system. We don’t clear any more cases percentage wise than back then, so technology hasn’t improved case clearance. However, prosecutions of cleared cases are now more successful and we incarcerate more people than any other country on the planet: 5 people per 1,000 population are imprisoned. So the chances of getting caught and prosecuted for a violent crime are only about 24%, same as 1970, but if you do get caught you’re more likely to serve a year or more in jail.

The paradox of this is that incarceration is not a crime deterrent while the fear of getting caught is.
