Willits Police Department Vehicle Rammed
On Monday, a Be on the Lookout [BOLO] went out from the Willits Police Department for a Humboldt County couple driving a silver Lexus. According to the scanner, the driver hit a Willits Police vehicle while escaping a traffic stop.
Today, the Willits Police sent us this press release about the incident. They are not ready to release information on the suspects’ names or whether the suspects are still believed to be from Humboldt County.
Press release provided by the Willits Police Department:
On Monday October 13th 2015 at about 7:45 AM, a Willits Police officer contacted two subjects who were camped in a vehicle, behind a closed business in the 10 block of Barbara Lane. The
driver was unable to produce identification, but verbally provided the officer with a name the officer would later determine to be false.
While the officer was in radio contact with WPD dispatch in regards to the subject, the subject suddenly accelerated the vehicle backwards nearly striking the officer, who had to move out of the vehicle’s path.
At that point, after a second WPD officer had arrived to assist, the driver accelerated forward, ramming the incoming WPD patrol vehicle, and quickly fled the area. The officers pursued the vehicle for a short distance but ultimately decided continuing the pursuit would pose too great of a public safety risk as it was approaching a heavy pedestrian and vehicular traffic area, and opted to terminate the pursuit.
The suspect’s identity is being withheld pending further investigation.
The investigation is currently ongoing and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Willits Police Department at (707)459-6122.
