A man was struck by vehicle just after 2 a.m. today. The accident happened on Highway 101 just south of Eureka.

“He [has] major injuries,” California Highway Patrol Sergeant Jeff Borgen said.

Borgen said the vehicle involved was a 1999 Cadillac Escalade. The woman driving the vehicle was from Fortuna.

“Her sobriety was fine,” Borgen said. “She was already released from the scene.”

The woman was driving southbound when she saw the man walk across the highway. She swerved and applied her brakes but still hit the pedestrian.

Borgen said the victim was originally believed to be a 57-year-old Eureka man. They later found out that the “ticket” in his pocket had someone else’s name on it. At this point, the man’s identity is unknown.

“[He] appears to be possibly a transient,” Borgen said.

Borgen said the man may not survive.

This is the second weekend in a row in which a major-injury traffic collision involving a pedestrian walking on Highway 101 has occurred just outside of Eureka. Both collisions happened at about 2 a.m. However, last weekend’s collision was north of Eureka. [Click here for last weekend’s story]

UPDATE 1:40 p.m.: Press release from the California Highway Patrol:

chpstarOn the morning of Sunday, September 27, a 1999 Cadillac Escalade was traveling on US-101 southbound, north of Humboldt Hill, when it collided into pedestrian who was walking in the traffic lanes.

At approximately 2:05 a.m., Teresa Louise Graham, age 28, of Eureka, was driving a 1999 Cadillac Escalade on US-101 southbound, north of Humboldt Hill.  A pedestrian, unknown identity, was wearing dark clothing and walking across the traffic lanes.  As the Cadillac’s headlights illuminated the pedestrian, Graham turned the vehicle to the left and applied the brakes in an attempt to avoid a collision.  Grahams’ attempt to avoid a collision was unsuccessful and the right front of the Cadillac struck the pedestrian.  As a result of this collision, the pedestrian sustained major injuries and was transported to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Eureka.  Due to the severity of the pedestrian’s injuries, he was air lifted to Santa Rosa Medial Center by the US Coast Guard.  While en route to Santa Rosa Medical Center, the man succumbed to his injuries he sustained as a result of this collision.  Graham was uninjured and released from the scene.  Alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be a factor in this collision.  The California Highway Patrol Humboldt Area is investigating this traffic collision.

The California Highway Patrol would like to take this unfortunate opportunity to remind motorist to be watchful for people walking and people bicycling; obey all speed limits; avoid distractions; and know the laws regarding pedestrian right-of-way.

Banning walking in Eureka would help many things. Sidewalk removal wouldn’t take long.
Hope he makes it bad way to go.

Removing the sidewalks only make sense if you want more people to walk in the road. Sarc?

Do you feel better after that comment? You might want to watch out, once you’ve been flown, you never know when they will return. The game Cat and Mouse continues.

I drove by right after it happened, lots of camping grear spread all over the freeway. It was a very long and straight stretch, he had to have seen the car coming. Although all the gear was close to the shoulder of the road, I’m really wondering how ” in the middle of the road” he was.

I once nearly killed an entire family while driving in the dark.

They weren’t transients… they were local folks taking their dog for a walk in a nice neighborhood in Petaluma.

The dog saved their lives.

You see, the whole lot of them were crossing a main thoroughfare at the middle of the block dressed black as ninjas. I had no idea they were there until their white dog changed position and was no longer blocked by the people.

I literally missed them by inches. They got mad at me.

I can’t figure out why ANYONE would wander around the roadways after sundown dressed in dark clothes.

The near-miss freaked me out for months. I can only imagine what the woman involved in this accident is going through now.

What’s an Obama phone?
Maybe u r referring to the lifeline program that helps poor folks with their cel bills. California opted out of that, there is no lifeline program available here.
If you dont believe me then just call your cel company and ask.

There are a lot of homeless camped along the old railroad tracks through that area so them crossing the 101 right through there isn’t surprising still doesn’t make it right
