Fatal Accident off of Hwy 36 Last Night

chpstarA fatal rollover accident occurred about 2:27 a.m. not far from Hwy 36, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesperson. A 1988 Toyota pickup was traveling on Mad River Rock Road when for unknown reasons the driver “drifted onto the north edge of the road.” The vehicle rolled over ejecting the driver who was not wearing a seatbelt. It went over a steep embankment coming to rest on its right side next to Hwy 36.

The driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. Two passengers who were wearing safety belts suffered head injuries and lacerations. “Alcohol and not using a safety belt” appears to be a factor in the accident.

The victim’s name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.

Sad news. The loss of life is horrible. Why don’t people wear seat belts? At least the passengers were smart enough to wear them. This isn’t the seventies. Plenty of education has been done on how effective they are at saving lives. What is the thinking that goes into not wanting to wear them?

Alcohol and no seat belts are “known reasons.” A Columbo “phone it in.” Glad they didn’t take anybody else with them.

Seems like Highway 36 takes at least 5 lives a year. I almost died on that road in 2011 I was coming down from Dinsmore to Bridgeville at a declining road grade slightly pressed my touchy breaks in my 98 Windstar van and did a donut in the middle of the road feet away of a cliff luckily there were no cars around because I could have died from impact of the crash from spinning or falling of the cliff. Pay attention on those windy roads and do not drive on them intoxicated.
