Firefighters responded this afternoon to a smoldering stump in the Arcata Forest.

UPDATE 3 p.m.: Fire Captain Nathan Padula said that someone had abandoned a campfire, it had smoldered for awhile and then moved into a nearby tree trunk. It was “deep-seated,” Padula said. Crews were attempting to break it up with axes and other tools to smother the fire.

No respect for our fragile community forest. Out of towners burn our forest during a drought. What the hell!😫
