[Update 8 p.m.] Late on Thursday Afternoon, Thousands Are Without Electricity in Mendocino and Humboldt
A little after 4 p.m today, multiple PG&E customers lost power. Over 3500 are without electricity in the Garberville area and over 1600 in the Laytonville area. Miranda, Myers Flat and Weott are all affected as well.
Below is an outage map from PG&E. Orange bubbles show where thousands of customers are without power, yellow shows where hundreds are out, and green shows smaller amounts.
We have a call into PG&E and will update with more information soon.
UPDATE 8 p.m.: According to a PG&E spokesperson, although 6000 were originally without power now power has been restored to most people. 1500 customers are still without power in the Laytonville and Low Gap area. The spokesperson said that an electrical transmission line is down in a steep canyon near Forest Glen. Repair work may take awhile there however, the spokesperson said that “Most if not all will have power back in the next hour to hour and a half.”

Are you for real
It came back on about 4:45 here in Weott
What’s up with all the outages all the time?
PG&E runs a minimal, ragtag, patch it here, glue it there power grid. Supposedly a public utility, they have shareholders who demand a profit. Growing up in Ohio with a much more severe, four-season scenario; power outages were rare. 95 F in the summer, 20F in the winter. Freeze, thaw, freeze. Frequent wild thunderstorms; power usually held. Here, the first rain or light frost and down goes the grid. Ridiculous. We also have a thriving DUI community which delights in ramming power poles whenever life is boring and they think we’re getting soft.
Thank God for cell phones, I can still connect to kymkemp dot com! Thanks for the update Kym. We were in the dark. Now we are enlightened.
Mine was off for about 30 minutes and now back on line. H
ope you all get yours soon. Like to have the fan on a day like this
Add Mad River to Ruth Area to the list. We’ve been watching PG&E flying power poles all day. Hope those two things are not related.
6 pm still out in benbow.
Still out of power in Piercy. 6:20 p.m.
Out in Leggett and Laytonville. Estimated time is 8:30 pm
Back on in benbow 630pm
leggett back on 6;30
Hope it be on when we back home from eka dinner.. good excuse to be out of town
Is that really all they said about it? How did the pole get down there? Why was it so crucial that it caused an outage to areas that usually have a different junction powering them? Etc…
The individual that I spoke to, while quite pleasant, obviously had no real knowledge of the situation. I attempted to press for more answers and kept getting answers that amounted to “I don’t know. All I know is what they told me.’
I think they enjoy keeping us in the dark. Pun intended.
Thanks for the personal reply Kym. I figured that was the case but had to ask as the story just seems so incomplete without the details. “an electrical transmission line is down in a steep canyon” is such an anticlimactic explanation for such an enormous outage.
PG&E is a bad joke on everybody, Kym. You probably already knew this and just got re-confirmed. The only positive aspect is that when the power is down, the meter stops spinning. With AT&T, they still demand payment, with increases, when they are down for 2 1/2 weeks. Do you get a refund when Suddenstink is down?
Jade helm!
pg&e pays all these tree services to come cut little branches in our town all spring and summer, year after year. And everytime the power goes off out here, its happens down the road in this one steep area.and it take days to fix a line in that steep area.I always tell them to focus on that area and stop fiddle faddlin around with these tiny branches next to our houses.have you ever seen how long it takes to cut one small branch.they have to drive miles out to the branch.unload and set up all their ropes and equipment.take a break.cut the branch and load everything back up.takes all day for a tree branch that isn’t even a problem, while at the same time neglecting the real issue down the road on the steep hill.
