Residents of Humboldt and Mendocino Counties awoke to phones and internet connections working. Not long before two a.m., as the connections came online, phones started buzzing with texts sent during the day yesterday.

AT&T worked into the early morning restoring the line which was reportedly damaged by vandals several miles south of Ukiah yesterday morning. Yesterday, AT&T denounced the act. They stated, “Vandalism is a serious matter that affects public safety and the community at large. We are cooperating with local law enforcement on an investigation of the matter.”

UPDATE 6:55 a.m.: Senator Mike McGuire tweets that while most residents have service restored, there are some problems.

UPDATE 10:07 a.m.:

  • How does this account for the other nationwide outages at the same time, and even throughout Ca? Unless it was a huge conspiracy…

    • I searched for any information about large outages…I didn’t find many other areas making complaints. There were other outages but they looked like the normal issues that can be found any day. I don’t think there was any nationwide outage.

    • Solar flares. We are in the beginning of an 80 year cycle of increased solar activity. We just came out of a 20 year lul in activity which is why all these technologies were developed in that time. Check out NASA website. More huge blackouts to come, including cel and wireless along with electricity. This is a good warning to be ready, utilize it as a drink to see how prepared you are.

  • To the people that got all bent out of shape over the fact they couldn’t purchase something yesterday, it’s on you. It’s on you for having faith in a piece of plastic with virtual money on it. Keep a little cash in your pockets for times like this. Let this be a lesson. It’s happened before, it will happen again.

    • Hahaha people crying cause they couldn’t facebook, same ones that will be complaining for a refund of some kind. helmets and knee pads with crustless creamy peanut butter sandwiches (unless of peanut allergies of course), your phone’s and services have made you soft even in the rugged hills of norcal. go fishing, paddle a kayak, fly a kite, most of you should be leafing plants anyways, no phone required. I wish they could shut it down for a couple days it would be like a vacation you know where you turn off the phone…..

      • Unfortunately, we are way past that the point of no return. The “smart” phone is such a part of us now. Look at photos of people, they have their phones. Most people, the first thing they do when they wake up, is pick up their phone. Any down time, look at your phone. Waiting for just a couple of minutes on something or someone, look at your phone. Awkward moments, thwarted by the phone. They almost had us with the head set. THE HEAD SET! I crack up when I see people with that damn thing in their ear. Usually rednecks trying to be hip.

  • Imagine what would happen after 3 days. This is one of the dangers that a cashless society would bring.
