[UPDATE 9:22 p.m.] Day 27: Lightning Fires

Keeping you on top of the fires with our summaries.

A quick look at the information coming in today shows that the Horse Fire is winding down (though a bad weather day could turn that around) but the Lassic Fire is marching east and south worrying residents in Southern Humboldt and southwestern Trinity.

Below we have our regular summary of each fire and then further down we have any new information coming in throughout the day that you need to know.

When we update each incident, we’ll note the time the facts were posted so you can quickly see if there is something new. Look for the most recent general updates on the bottom but new information for individual fires is posted in the summaries below in blue.  (Newest maps of the fires here.) Those that have expanded 20% or more will have their acreage in red bold type. 

  • Horse Fire (northeast of Shelter Cove): (Current as of 6:45 p.m.) 146 acres  and 85% contained. Total Fire Personnel: 927. “The Bureau of Land Management has reopened the Lost Coast Trail in the King Range National Conservation Area, though some trails remain closed. Today crews continued to work to put out hot spots and strengthen control lines in steep, rugged terrain....Motorists need to please drive cautiously while driving near the fire area where heavy equipment and fire engines are traveling to and from the fire.” (More info here.) Fire Information Line: 925-588-9192
  • Fork Complex (Trinty Pines and north to Hayfork):(Current as of 6 p.m.) 36,499 acres burned and 90% contained. Structures Destroyed: Residences 8, other buildings 4, Firefighter injuries to date: 12, Total Personnel:667. “Fire behavior is expected to continue to be minimal as containment continues to be successful. Expect slower fire growth with mostly surface fire spread in unburned pockets.” (More info here.)
  • Gasquet Fire: (Current as of 7 p.m.18,596 acres burned and 20% containment. Total Personnel: 663. Injuries: 6.  “Tonight the marine layer will move in and relative humidity (RH) will rise to 80% in the valleys and on the slopes. Ridge tops above the marine layer will see RH around 40%.” (More info here)
  • Mad River Complex (Ruth Lake and Surroundings) Now Combined with the Route Complex -see below: (7:30 p.m.) 36,055 acres and 54% contained. “A Public Meeting will be held Wednesday August 26th at 5:30pm at Ruth Lake Guard Station…Gobbler and Pickett Fires continue to be in patrol status, with no additional movement anticipated. Backing and flanking fire, along with single and group tree torching. SW flow may push eastern edge of Lassic….Lassic Fire (16,791 acres, 7 % contained as of Tuesday morning)

  • Nickowitz Fire (northern Humboldt/southern Del Norte):(Current as of 7:45 p.m.) 5893 acres and 54% contained. Total Personnel: 349. “Main fire spread will be to the southwest along Nickowitz Creek toward Barren Butte below the the 13N01 road. Firing operations will be conducted to stay ahead of potential runs in Soapstone Gulch to strengthen control lines as fire moves towards the 13N01 road. Firing of handline constructed from 12N02 Road toward Bear Pen flat will continue as necessary to keep fire even as it backs into the west end of Nickowitz Creek. ”  (More info here) Phone: 530-627-3246.
  • River Complex:(Current as of 7:15 p.m.) 57,993 burned and 26% contained. Total Personnel: 584.Significant changes in acreage shown today is reflective of two days of fire growth. River Complex resources were sent to support an initial attack unfolding near Weaverville today. The slop over near Big Mountain subdivision that hampered containment efforts on the SE corner of the fire, was contained today at approximately 40 acres.” (More info here.) Telephone number for the public information officer 530-276-8559.   • Route Complex (south and west of Hyampom and Buck Mt. area) Now Combined with the Mad River Complex:(Current as of 7:45 p.m.) 35,451 acres burned and 42% contained. Structures destroyed: 2 outbuildings. Total Personnel: 646. Injury: 1. “Johnson Fire (33,782 acres, 34% contained) The (southern edge), which saw a large amount of fire activity during today’s shift, will need to be closely monitored in order to limit spread. ” (More info here.)     South Complex (north and west of Hyampom):(Current as of 6:20 p.m.) 26,764 acres burned and 60% containment. Personnel: 718. Injuries: 3.  “The Fire behavior on the main portion of the fire was moderate today with single tree torching, backing and creeping. Crews built depth and strengthened fire lines on the Pattison fire above Hyampom Creek with firing operations. That fire behavior was more active with short uphill runs and group torching but was within the planned perimeter.” (More info here)

UPDATE 10:48 a.m.:

UPDATE 1:40 p.m.: Trinity County has released it’s latest information on road and evacuations. Click here for more.

UPDATE 4 p.m.:

UPDATE 6:40 p.m.: The Del Norte County Sheriff announced that the Coon Fire in the Gasquet Complex has likely damaged the water system for the Rock Creek area. Search and Rescue is on the way with pallets of water. “The area is too hot to assess damage at this time,” stated the Sheriff’s Facebook page. “The [e]stimated time for repairs is unknown.”
