[UPDATE 11:04 p.m.] Day 25: Lightning Fires

Smoke still fills the skies, residents are still unable to return to homes as we close in on four weeks since the lighting fires began. Each day we begin a new post and add important information as we learn about it.

When we update each incident, we’ll note the time the facts were posted so you can quickly see if there is something new. Look for the most recent general updates on the bottom but new information for individual fires is posted in the summaries below in blue.  (Newest maps of the fires here.) Those that have expanded 20% or more will have their acreage in red bold type. 

  • Horse Fire (northeast of Shelter Cove): (Current as of 7 p.m.) 146 acres  and 58% contained. Total Fire Personnel: 955. “Resources made excellent progress today building and strengthening control lines in steep, rugged terrain with vertical drops in some areas…Motorists need to please drive cautiously while driving near the fire area where heavy equipment and fire engines are traveling to and from the fire.” (More info here.) Fire Information Line: 925-588-9192
  • Fork Complex (Trinty Pines and north to Hayfork):(Current as of 8:40 a.m. not updated as of 10:30 p.m.) 36,499 acres burned and 78% contained. Structures Destroyed: Residences 8, other buildings 4, Firefighter injuries to date: 12, Total Personnel: 1498. “Most of the Fork Complex continues to be quiet, with fire activity concentrated in the Chanchelulla Wilderness areaAs many evacuations and road closures end, people returning to these areas are urged to be cautious….There will be a community meeting tomorrow evening at the Hayfork Community Church, 7450, Highway 3, Hayfork, at 7:00 p.m. It will be streamed live at: http://bit.ly/1JEWB3k.” (More info here.)
  • Gasquet Fire: (Current as of 7:30 p.m.) 16,187 acres burned and 15% containment. Total Personnel: 626. Injuries: 5.  “Tonight the marine layer will move in and relative humidity will rise to 50-85%. Low temperatures will be in the upper 50s to lower 60s, and winds will be light, except southerly and gusty along the ridges. Mild conditions will persist on Monday with a marine influence.” (More info here)
  • Mad River Complex (Ruth Lake and Surroundings) Now Combined with the Route Complex -see below: (9:20 p.m.) 33,622 acres and 53% contained (dropped 12%). “The Lassic Fire will continue to slowly but consistently add acreage to the east and south.

  • Nickowitz Fire (northern Humboldt/southern Del Norte):(Current as of 7:20 p.m.) 5558 acres and 53% contained. Total Personnel: 391. “Main fire spread will be to the southwest along Nickowitz Creek toward Barren Butte below the the 13N01 road. Firing operations will be conducted to stay ahead of potential runs in Soapstone Gulch to strengthen control lines as fire moves towards the 13N01 road. Firing of handline constructed from 12N02 Road toward Bear Pen flat will continue as necessary to keep fire even as it backs into the west end of Nickowitz Creek.”  (More info here) Phone: 530-627-3246.
  • River Complex:(Current as of 8:30 p.m.) 52,065 burned and 23% contained. Total Personnel: 637.Slop over near the Big Mountain subdivision hampered containment efforts on the SE corner of the fire. Slop over was held to one acre and has been lined and contained.” (More info here.) Telephone number for the public information officer 530-276-8559. Estimated containment: October 01st, 2015
  • Route Complex (south and west of Hyampom and Buck Mt. area) Now Combined with the Mad River Complex:(Current as of 9:10 p.m.) 35,076 acres burned and 42% contained. Structures destroyed: 2 outbuildings. Total Personnel: 854. Injury: 1. “Upper level winds will increase from the south-southwest. This will cause ridgetop winds to increase today through Monday.” (More info here.) Telephone number for the public information officer is 707-574-6865.     South Complex (north and west of Hyampom):(Current as of 5:45 p.m.) 24,089 acres burned and 55% containment. Personnel: 908. Injuries: 3 “A community meeting is planned for Monday August 24 at the Hyampom Fire Station. Start time is 4 pm. (More info here)

Ditto, I’m in Oregon wanting information on Trinity. The gov. sites are usually down and crappy. This site rocks! Thank you
