Lost Horses Seek Out Firefighters
Information from the Route Complex Public Information Officer:
Firefighters from the Route Complex found two horses walking Kerlin Road (3N14) near the fire’s edge on August 9 above the town on Hyampom. The horses approached firefighters and were found to be very friendly. Community members and firefighters rounded up the horses and trailered them out to safety on August 10th. Both horses are being cared for by caring community members.

They look starved. I hope that’s just from running off from fire.
Not starved, just old… that’s #2. #1 looks like she’s got some thoroughbred; they always look thin.
Really ? starved ???? Please !!! I had a 25 + year old horse .. people called it in ALL the damn time !!! Unless you own a horse, Please MOVE on!!!!
There are several people that have offered pasture space for displaced animals in various online things like Facebook. Hopefully the owner is looking for them. I know that if you are in a mandatory evacuation it is one trip out and you can’t return. Too many animals to fit in a trailer?
Pretty sure 35-38 mile marker route one. I heard some got let out around there in the fire.
A tip for horse owners who might have to turn out their horses during an evacuation: use magic marker and write your phone # on their hooves.
Someone loves them….. their hooves are trimmed and shod ! Hope their people find them soon.
Plus, they are friendly and trusting, usually a good sign.

I hope they find their people. In’97 we had to turn ours out bc of a flood. They came home when the waters receded. But I will never forget the worry.
Back in the winter solstice, 1977, windstorm, Ricki turned her horses out of the barn so they would not be crushed if the barn collapsed. She figured that they would flee in panic but could be recovered later. The critters got about ten yards out, put their noses down in the fresh, sweet grass and that is where they stayed for the duration. Howling winds, lying debris, no problem.

I know who owns them. I’m trying to contact them. They are not old and not starved. They have been on their own for about 2 weeks since the fire scared them off. So they haven’t gotten the feed they would normally get. The owner doesn’t have Internet so they didn’t know they had been found. Thank you to all who helped save them.
Awesome! That is fantastic.
Excellent news, Glad someone recognizes them! They look in very reasonable condition for what they have just been through…
