[UPDATE 9 a.m.] Breaking News: Inmate Firefighter Seriously Injured on Humboldt Complex

InmateAn inmate working on the Pine Fire incident in the Humboldt Complex was seriously injured when a tree fell on him. The man was medevacked to Mercy Hospital in Redding with “back, neck and abdominal injuries,” according to Cal Fire spokesperson Laura Coleman.

A firefighter recently died in the Tahoe area Saturday evening when a falling tree struck him. Another firefighter was injured in the same accident.

At this point we don’t know at which camp the inmate was stationed or with which unit he was working or even whether the accident happened last night or early this morning. We’ll be updating this situation as soon as more information is available.

UPDATE 9 a.m.: According to Terri Klemetson of KMUD News, the inmate was being readied for transport about 11 p.m. last night. She said that the Cal Fire morning meeting announced that he had been released from the hospital.

I hope he comes through with a full recovery. These inmates add so much to the firefighting effort.

When trees get burned from the inside out they can start falling apart and be very dangerous to stand near or work around.
Get well soon inmate.

Will the “state” pay his bills and disability since he was injured on their job? I’m not a fan of seeing the slave labor thing go on, but they do a good job and it beats a tank.
This is the second major injury in these fires, as a fire fighter was killed near Alturas in the Frog Fire.

Very sad.

What do you think? His obamacare will take care of it?

The Third, a Firefighter died in Tahoe the other day as well. The State pays his medical bills while he’s in prison, then he would have to apply for Medi-cal or get some other insurance. No Workers comp for prisoners, because they do not pay into it.

These inmates provide a much needed support to the already strained resources in Humboldt County. They have an option to sit out their term in prison. These individuals have chosen to work and work hard in a effort to turn their lives around. They will leave prison a changed person by this experience. Don’t knock ’em…appreciate them! Please…
