Here’s this morning’s maps. Check out how the fires have changed for better or worse by comparing the images over time. (Note, the fire expansion on the River Map that we wrote about last night.) As of 7:30 this morning, these are in most cases more accurate than the Inciweb online maps. (Click the maps for actual maps. Click the link below to go to the incident page online.)

Thanks for keeping everybody up to date! Note it’s not *my* GeoMAC map, it’s from the USGS / USFS, thus it’s ours (public resource).
Oops. I’ve been giving you credit for that map for the past two days. Thanks for letting me know.
http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=86348&src=twitter-nh just found this one , its from space . you can click a map and they get big and has zoom feature

This is probably a really silly question, but I’m just trying to make sense of the maps etc. The orange cross-hatched areas… are these the areas that fire crew have established an effective perimeter?
Fire perimeter maps are not current. Post Mountain burn happened on Fri 7/31 and did not update until Wed. 8/5. Someone told me that they are a visual, so if the smoke is too thick, the planes can’t get over the fires to update the perimeters. They do not show containment areas, only burned areas.
Thanks, I ended up having the best luck with Google earth. Thanks all. Kym, best coverage I’m finding so far. Will you have an update from the Burnt Ranch meeting in an hour? Many many thanks!!
Sadly, no. I don’t know anyone at it. But if someone could help by posting what they know would be great!
The cross hatch areas are the areas that have burned. The edge of the cross hatch is the fire perimeter.
But, as debi b pointed out, often the perimeter data is a day or more old.
Also, earlier today I updated my code so now when you look at the google map (link at the start of this thread) and click on a cross hatch area, the popup displays “date” and “date loaded” in human readable form. This works for all fires.
I am guessing that “date” is when the perimeter you see on the map was produced by staff as a result of various data inputs including infrared fly overs.

Kym,
Your Aug 5 map is a PNG for the River Complex. Do you have the PDF available for public consumption.
They have much better resolution. Thanks for all the work. Copious thanks for the folks on the fire line and in support.
Thanks for letting us know. For some reason, all of the maps on this post came out as PNG files. I think I fixed it.
