[UPDATE 11:31 p.m. Hwy 36 Closed/Evacuations] The Lightning Fires, Day Two

11798475_10153136144799436_214936970_n

As the sun struggles through a thick blanket of smoke to the east, Emerald Triangle government agencies and local fire departments are trying to determine how many fires are still burning, what structures are threatened, and how to fight back. We’ll be updating with information today on the fires in this post. (See yesterday’s photos and information here.)

First Note of the day 7:05 a.m.: A Humboldt resident helped a friend evacuate from near Hyampom in Trinity County on a forest road known as Route 1. He took the above photo at 2 a.m. He said he was told by CDF that there were 13 fires in the area.

UPDATE 7:15 a.m.: High temperatures predicted today inland will impede firefighting efforts. Below are some of the forecast numbers for our area posted by the National Weather Service (NWS) on their Facebook page. Occasional lightning is predicted. The NWS posted, “Isolated thunderstorms are expected today and tonight across the NW California interior. Trinity [C]ounty and Mendocino National Forest will be the focus for activity today, but chances will spread west into far eastern Del Norte and Humboldt counties as well.”

UPDATE 7:30 a.m.:  Cal Fire states, “33 lightning sparked fires for 50 acres in the Alder Point-Blocksburg area (Humboldt Co). Also a quick update on two fires burning before yesterday in Humboldt County–Cal Fire says, “#‎BuckFire‬ [final] off Alderpoint Road & Wallan Road near Garberville (Humboldt County) is now 100% contained at 16 acres.” And, “‪#‎QueenFire‬ [update] off Hwy 169 & McKinnon Hill Rd, 5 miles SE of Pecwan (Humboldt County) remains 158 acres & 85% contained.”

UPDATE 7:31 a.m.: Redway Fire Chief Brian Anderson tells us there are 37 fires in Southern Humboldt as of midnight.

UPDATE 8:07 a.m.: There is a fire on South Fork mountain across the road from the water district near Ruth Lake.

UPDATE 8:15 a.m.: Tweet from Cal Fire:

UPDATE 8:32 a.m.:

UPDATE 9 a.m.: New fire called in. Red marker indicates roughly where it is located.

CaptureUPDATE 9:15 a.m.: Cal Fire writes, “#‎MendocinoLightningFires‬ [update] 6 lightning sparked fires for 34 acres & 80% contained in the Willits & Brooktrails area (Mendocino County.) All but one 8 acre fire is contained.”

UPDATE 9:35 a.m.: A landowner sends us this photo taken “half way between Casterlin School and the Blocksburg Dump, looking west.” 20150731_092129Smoke from multiple fires clog the view. The landowner tells us how incredibly grateful he is for Cal Fire, the inmate crews and especially the volunteer firefighters. He said the Alderpoint crew was at his place and they worked in the heat and smoke to put out the fire. It choked him up. He said, “That’s not their paid job and they’re…busting their ass for you… .”

Take a minute and say thank you to your firefighters–the paid crews, the inmate crews and the volunteers. Next time they have a fundraiser, drop a chunk of change in their jars.

UPDATE 9:42 a.m.: Possibility of Evacuations in Hyampom

UPDATE 9:52 a.m.: Will Oliver, watch commander at the Trinity County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed there are evacuations ordered west of Hyampom. See below:

She described how easy it was to access the area as stretched thin fire personnel struggled to deal with a very large fire.  “There [were] no fire personnel there when we got there last night around 10:30 pm and we were able to go right up to the fire boundary. [W]e left the fire around 11:30 pm and a couple of fire vehicles were headed up to check the scene.”

The forest agencies (CalFire and USFS) have ordered several incident management teams for the fires in Hayfork, Denny and the Ruth area. An incident management team is ordered when a fire (or fires) escape the ability of the local folks to contain them. The teams are either working or enroute right now. The big issue with most of these fires will be very stiff competition for resources such as engines, hand crews, dozers and aircraft. There are a lot of fires burning in California at the moment, and NorCal is almost at drawdown. Orders will almost certainly be processed for out-of state resources. This is a very dangerous time right now. A good resource for information is wildlandfire.com. Click on the header named “Hotlist” and then “IA-California & Hawaii”. IA stands for Initial Attack. You will see threads within the IA section for “Continuing Fires” and “Questions and Discussion”. Some incidents will get a lot of input, and others won’t. It depends on who is active in the areas concerned. Hope this helps.

A vehicle, seeming more like a truck than a fire engine, with siren blaring, just raced across the Alderpoint Road bridge at the Eel River heading north. Whether towards Zenia or Casterlin it is not possible to say since the road forks a mile or so up the hill.

Postmistress said one house and 2 barns lost in Casterlin Road area. That’s the fire we were watching last night, and today the smoke plume is much larger. Postmistress thought no one was there fighting that fire.

As we came down the Alderpoint road heading north towards town around 3pm today the valley was filled with a thick smoke. Getting closer we could see four fires burning. One was the Casterlin fire over the ridge to the North of the Eel (and town). The other three were burning in river canyon or on the slopes of the canyon west of the town. Distances are difficult to ascertain but the nearest seems to be within a mile, the other two perhaps within 2 miles. The postmistress said there was a fire on Steelhead road, a road which parallels the Eel river westward and connects with logging roads to allow access. She thought firefighters were fighting that one. If she’s right, that’s the closest fire. The Alderpoint Fire Dept has a truck which is parked at the Dept yard, I do not know if they have a second one which is out on mission.

That dang truck at the APVFD Hall does not run. The Alderpoint Crew has been covering the Alderpoint Cal-Fire Station since last Saturday, & were out fighting fire as soon as they all started yesterday. They spent the night last night fighting fires in multiple areas & were back at it this morning with little to no sleep, now tonight they are staged near the fire on Pine Mountain.Hopefully they will get some much needed rest. Stay safe everyone!!

Cal fire:
Humboldt Lightning Fires
#HumboldtLightningFires [update] 44 lightning sparked fires for 50 acres in the Alder Point-Blocksburg area (Humboldt Co).

It was 100 degrees in Alderpoint today at 4pm. I’m looking for more detailed information about the fires that threaten the town itself.

Got a message from a friend who has a boat at Ruth Lake, at 4:12 this afternoon:
“Just got word they are evacuating Ruth campgrounds. We have our boat over there. I called to see if we should move it and the lady at the marina said Caltrans is closing the road. They can see the fire from the marina. They aren’t expecting the fire line to hold. “

Another active plume south of Alderpoint. The weather is looking strange for the next few days so its a crap shoot as to how this unfolds. Kind of eerie out there. Hope the Ruth rodeo grounds is not in the path of the fires … I would assume there are a buncha rodeo animals there in pens right now.

I know this sounds silly but, who is feeding the firefighters ? Do they bring food with them?

That doesn’t sound silly at all. A good meal goes a long way. So how are they getting food?

Ash is falling through the fog in Arcata. Hope everyone stays safe out there. Thanks to all who are fighting these fires.

Back in the days of Sentry Market, the Cal fire chief would call in so many bag lunches (2 sandwiches with meat n cheese, a small bag of chips, an apple or orange and a bottle of water), I worked at the deli at the time and we would pack the bag lunches for them. I have no idea if Rays (C n K) market does that, but the good ol boys at Sentry did. I remember at one time in 2003 I think it was that we packed 300 bag lunches in one day.
