Willits Fires Caused by Rogue Lightning, More Lightning in Southeastern Trinity

According to the National Weather Service, lightning struck unexpectedly several times in the area around the junction of Hwy 162 and Hwy 101 today near Willits. The NWS retweeted a photo taken in that area at approximately 1:43 p.m. which shows an “active cell.”

Fires were reported shortly thereafter south of the junction. As of 3 p.m., the Mendocino County Sheriff is reporting the fires are either contained or nearly contained.


Marker shows general area of at least one fire that was caused by lightning.

As of 3:30 p.m., the Weather Service was seeing lightning striking in remote areas of the Yolla Bollies in southeastern Trinity County.
