Another Attempted Suicide at Humboldt County Correctional Facility
This is a press release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office. The information has not been proven in a court of law and the individuals described should be presumed innocent until proven guilty:
On 07-12-2015 at about 2:20 p.m. an inmate housed in the Humboldt County Correctional Facility jumped off the top tier of a housing unit in what appears to be an attempt to commit suicide. The inmate has been identified as Cyrus David Cook Jr. age 35 from Eureka. When Cook fell on the floor he received severe trauma to his body with the initial impact with the floor.
Two Correctional Deputies assigned to work inside the housing unit saw Cook falling from the top tier after he jumped. The two Correctional Deputies and jail medical staff immediately provided lifesaving efforts to Cook by immobilizing his head and neck and providing oxygen. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were notified and responded to the Correctional Facility. Once EMS responded they continued lifesaving efforts and Cook was transported to a local hospital by ambulance. Cook was later flown to an out of the area hospital and is currently listed in critical condition. Due to Cook’s medical condition he was released on his own reconnaissance by a Humboldt County Superior Court Judge and is no longer in custody.
Cook was booked into the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on July 6, 2015 by the Eureka Police Department for misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance and violation of probation.
This incident is currently under a joint investigation by the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office and the Humboldt County District Attorney’s Office.

Why don’t HIPAA laws apply to jails? How can they release names and medical information.
Even if a person is charged with a crime, they are not yet convicted. Theoretically, you or I could be (wrongly) thrown in jail and have private medical info released to the public without our permission.
