[UPDATE: 7/9 Contained] Seven More Fires Pop Up on Highway 169

It looks like Cal Fire is having a busy day dealing with fires along Highway 169. After a morning of dealing with fires near Weitchpec, fire crews are responding to seven additional fires in the Pecwan area. We’ll keep updating this post as we get more information.

UPDATE 5:07 p.m.: According to Laura Coleman, spokesperson for Cal Fire, this incident was first spotted by a US Forest Service plane about one this afternoon. There are now ten known fires that total about nine acres. These are still under investigation but are suspicious in nature. Currently, Coleman says, there are multiple crews and engines fighting the fire. In addition, there are two tankers, air tactical, three helicopters, a private water tender, Hoopa Fire Department, and the US Forest Service. more moore2 UPDATE 7:42 p.m.: Tweet from Cal Fire:

We had some rain, not a lot but enough for the fine fuels to lessen the rate of spread. Been a lot of fires down that way. They were working hard to get crews to all the fires. 3 more fires up near the top of the GO road, and possibly a couple hiding from the lightning.
