Arcata Man Convicted of Assault
Press release provided by the District Attorney’s Office:
On June 29, 2015, in the case of the People of the State of California v. Phoenix Campbell-Loya, the jury found the defendant guilty of felony assault with a deadly weapon and felony carrying a concealed dirk or dagger.
On December 3, 2014, the defendant approached two 17-year-old boys in Shay Park and, after a brief conversation, stole property from them and assaulted one of the boys with a knife while threatening to stab him. The victim, who was not injured in the assault, was not previously acquainted with the defendant. The defendant has been in custody since the incident.
Deputy District Attorney Roger C. Rees prosecuted the case with assistance from District Attorney Investigator Jack Bernstein. The defendant was represented at trial by Deputy Public Defender Meagan O’Connell. Judge Marilyn Miles presided over the week-long jury trial. In addition to the two teenagers, Arcata Police Officers Jeremiah Kasinger and Joshua Phinney testified at trial.
The scheduled sentencing date is July 27, 2015. The maximum sentence for these crimes is four years, eight months, in state prison.
District Attorney Maggie Fleming added, “I appreciate the time and attention given to the case by the jury and the efforts of Roger, Jack and the Arcata Police Department.”

He looks like a turtle alien, yikes!!!
Never let Humboldt County take yer picture. They’re worse than any DMV in history. If you get arrested, demand a mug shot from Mendo World… or… not. Maybe it’s better they post images that not even your mother would recognize.
What does this have to do with a Two Short concert? I must have missed some details but Shay Park is over off Alliance Ave and nowhere near any potential concert that may have been occurring (?)
I made a mistake and connected this with another arrest. I apologize.
Just curious, has Meagan O’Connell EVER won a case? Kym, can you post her stats or show where they can be found?
I can name 1 case she recently won. Dane Carr was found not guilty in a case where he was accused of carrying a dirk/dagger in Grocery Outlet.
Public defenders aren’t supposed to win any cases as they are hired by court to make sure defendant
has legal representation in local kangaroo court to make court seem fair and unbiased. PD and DA already discussed case and agree on outcome of trail hearing before it is put before judge. Many winters ago I went to bar across from court house in county I lived. Seen the DA and PD discussing afternoon cases. Both were having a drink with lunch. DA had mixed drink PD had beer. They were laughing about how PD client got 10 years. The PD remarked. “You should have seen the look on his face when he got 10 years, instead of five.” The presiding judge was a well known alcoholic. It was common knowledge if you went before him on mornings on alcohol related charges . The judge would be cranky and had sort of a pale green skin paler with trembling hands from hangover. He’d throw the book at defendant. In the afternoon court the judge would be beet red, jovial and more lenient after swilling down a liquid 90 proof lunch…
