Yet Another Suspicious Vegetation Fire at Gulch in Eureka
Humboldt Bay Fire is at the scene of a vegetation fire in the gulch near M Street and 15th Street in Eureka that started before 2:30 p.m. today.
“We keep on coming here and keep on putting it out,” Battalion Chief Kent Hulbert says.
Hulbert says this is the third fire at this location in three days as he points to two burnt patches of grass from previous fires. Hulbert says “every single one of them” is suspicious. Firefighters are intentionally burning grass in the surrounding area in what Hulbert is calling a “vegetation management burn.”
“We’ll probably spend about an hour out here,” Hulbert says.
According to Hulbert, there are homeless encampments in the area, and he says people need to be more careful where they throw their cigarette butts because of the weather and time of year.
We’ll update with more photos later.
