Humboldt Bay Fire was dispatched to the scene of a structure fire on the 3100 block of M Street in Eureka at 11:06 p.m. on Saturday. Scanner traffic indicated that the fire was located in a garage.

“We arrived and saw fire around in the alley,” Humboldt Bay Fire battalion chief Kent Hulbert said. “There was fairly extensive damage to the contents [of the building].”

Hulbert said the fire is still being investigated, but he said at this point they are considering it “suspicious” in nature. This reporter heard and felt a pop come from the building at one point.

Humboldt Bay Fire was also dispatched to the scene of a reported fire on Beechwood Drive during the fire on M Street. Hulbert said, because of this there were only three engines on scene rather than the usual four engines.

“We were down an engine here,” Hulbert said.

Hulbert said the fire on Beechwood Drive “wasn’t as reported.” Hulbert said, no injuries have been reported at this time.

This was my family’s home! I was born and raised there. My family owned it from its initial building until 1979.
Have many happy memories of holidays, Mom and Dad (who are no longer with us), our pets ,neighborhood
friends, summers and of course burrowing under covers on all those rainy nights!

The timing of this incident is so very strange! My younger daughter, her boyfriend and his son were just pulling into Eureka shortly after 11pm. They are moving to Seattle from San Diego. She has only been there once before and that was 9 years ago. We had been talking about whether or not they would drive by the next day to get pictures for me. I had googled the address that night out of curiosity and nostalgia at the same time that it was burning!
I had the best childhood ever on M St. It was a terrific place to grow up. I am very thankful that no one was hurt and very thankful to the fire department!
