Mementos left in front of the Vietnam War Memorial

Cristina Bauss, a North Coast resident and former reporter, stood at the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial two days ago. It was her third time at the monument and this time a small story found her. She described it on her Facebook page.

A grizzled older gentleman in a worn leather jacket stepped in front of me by accident, immediately apologized, and I told him no apology was necessary. He then pulled a miniature liquor bottle out of his pocket, set it down gently, quickly found a name whose location he clearly knew, and traced it lightly with his fingertip. “See you next year, buddy,” he said, before walking away hurriedly, choked up behind his dark sunglasses.

He wasn’t the only one choking up.
