Hummus Recalled (What Will Humboldt Do?)

Press release provided by the US Food and Drug Administration:

Today Sabra Dipping Co., LLC announced that it is voluntarily recalling approximately 30,000 cases of its Classic Hummus due to possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes. This measure is limited to five SKUs of Classic Hummus sold nationwide.  To date, no other Sabra product is affected by this recall.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.

To date, there have been no reports indicating that these products have caused any illness.

The products being recalled are listed below and were distributed to retail outlets, including food service accounts and supermarkets, in the U.S. Consumers can find code and use by dates on the top of each package.

  • Sabra’s hummus sucks, but what do you expect from PepsiCo ? It’s so easy to make your own.

  • In the case of the cash cow that is Ray’s in Redway maybe they will have room to stock some guacamole and maybe some nice gouda cheese. Apparently I am some sort of eclectic freak for even asking that these be stocked. It would appear I am not conformist enough to get into the hummus craze.

  • Although I agree with “Eastside” that Chatauqua has a great selection, I disagree that “Sabra Sucks”, or that it is easy to make your own. I could build you a refrigerator easier than make a bowl of humus. But, can Eastside build a refrigerator? Sorry, but I don’t have the time to build my own convenience foods.

Just last night I made myself a saucer full of Sabra Garlic flavored hummus stuffed celery sticks, this morning I woke up to the recall on television. Imagine my dismay. It seems that a high percentage of recalls are from health foods. Strange isn’t it?

    • Jerez Ernie, what did I say to piss you off? Humus is easier than anything to make, just canned garbanzo beans, lemon juice, parsley, tahini, garlic and cumin whirled up in a food processor. If you tasted homemade you would agree with me, honestly .

  • Eastside. I’m sorry if I sounded pissed off. Nothing could be further from the truth. Frustrated, yes, pissed off, no.

Thank you for the recipe, now if I just knew what some of that stuff was.

Sorry again, absoloutly no offense intended!

    • Tahini is a sesame seed paste you can get at Chautaqua. I forgot olive oil . Cumin is a cooking herb, some recipes leave it out but I like . You can google a basic recipe and then tweak it how you like it. Also forgot salt. So easy, just dump it all in processor and whir it up to a paste. Takes 5 minutes, I guarantee it is infinatly easier than building a refrigerator !!

  • Ernie, P.S. No offense taken !
