Press release provided by the Department of Health and Human Services:

On March 27, the Mobile Outreach vehicle was providing services to people visiting the McKinleyville Family Resource Center. McKinleyville resident Jessica McDermid stopped by and got a pleasant surprise when DHHS’s Bill Bennett offered her a bag of several packets of high-quality vegetable and fruit seeds.

Looking for a way to add fresh, healthy produce to your diet? With spring in the air, the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) is encouraging people to consider planting a garden.

“Gardening provides a great opportunity to spend time outside while growing your own nutritious fruits and vegetables,” said DHHS Assistant Director, Programs Barbara LaHaie. “The seed program is another example of Mobile Outreach providing services that support healthy living.”

DHHS’s Mobile Outreach program is offering free assorted vegetable seed packets to those who visit the traveling vehicle on one of its scheduled stops around the county.

Every month, Mobile Outreach staff members bring mental health, public health and social services and/or referrals to other providers or programs to county residents living outside the greater Humboldt Bay area. Stops are made to places including Carlotta, Fortuna, Hoopa, McKinleyville, Orick, Orleans, Phillipsville, Rio Dell, Weitchpec and Willow Creek.

The Mobile Outreach RV—which has been converted into an office on wheels—parks at centrally located sites in each community such as Family Resource Centers, clinics, tribal offices and volunteer fire departments. On board services include, but are not limited to, mental health assessments and counseling and assistance filling out applications for CalFresh, CalWORKs, health insurance and the Transportation Assistance Program. Other services include Well Child Dental visits and car seat safety inspections.
