A fire started west of Leggett in northern Mendocino today. The blaze started about 8 a.m. as a permitted fire in a logging area. Work crews were burning slash piles when a wind whipped the fire out of control and up the hill into timber.

About 11:15 a.m., Leggett Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to the fire. Piercy responded as well as Cal Fire and a con crew.

The blaze spread through 3.5 acres. No structures were threatened during the blaze. The logging crews helped fight the fire with their equipment and Cal Fire brought in a helicopter.

Crews got a line around it late this afternoon. Calfire and the loggers are currently on site.
