What's on Your Mind?

This may be a little early for an open post. Maybe there aren’t enough visitors yet to get the conversation rolling on down the road but, here goes…

Do you have something you want to talk about? From the guy who jacked your parking spot to the homeless crisis to the dire need for medical doctors on the North Coast to the state of our roads, here’s your post to try and get a conversation going with your community.

We never had an open comment thread on the LoCO. I’ve always wanted to see what you all would do with one. So, choose a topic and share your thoughts.

  • Good Luck Kym! I think you’ll do just fine, Already liking the new site. Goodbye Loco…..

  • My apologies if this is a sensitive subject, but you did ask what is on our minds 🙂

I keep wondering why you did not write a farewell to your readers on LoCO? Did you want to, but we’re not allowed, or was it your choice?

    • You know I didn’t even think about writing a farewell. Maybe because I knew the RHBB was here to address folks. Andrew did ask me to comment for his (very nice) post and I couldn’t think of a thing to say. Dang, I missed a chance to say how much I loved working on the LoCO and being part of the LoCO community. My favorite times were when a big story like a wildfire was breaking and the readers would add what they knew. It was so exciting to feel the community moving together to help each other. I loved it.

Hopefully, the RHBB will continue to do those kinds of stories and we’ll build our own community here.

  • Kym, can you talk about the state of affairs with the local marijuana market. I have been out of the area for almost 20 years and I just can’t see it continuing to be a money maker. But like I said, not in the know anymore. Is it go big or go home, are other states taking a bite out of the profits? Thanks

    • There is plenty of money being made in the marijuana business. Prices per pound are lower but most growers are putting in more plants or are doing multiple deps or are growing larger plants in order to bring in similar amounts of money.

  • If you’re making pot butter what’s the best way to separate the pot from the butter? Is there a special tool? (like a potato ricer that I haven’t been able to find anywhere)
I’ve been dumping it into a metal colander and pressing it out with a spoon into a bowl but it seems like I’m wasting a lot.

  • Like the bookings, weather report, images, Green green grass. Do you have a new email address?

    • Same email….Thank goodness. One more change would make me crazy. The LoCO is the place I go for the bookings and weather report.

      • Thanks that make good sense. What about a mailing or bank account number, so you can get paid? I feel a bit guilty not doing more and am sure others do as well. I love no commercials ,economics means your bills need to be paid. I like RHBB Reports or The RHBB Reporter

        • I have to admit RHBB Reports would simplify my life. I have to give the name of my publication when I call government agencies, etc. Yesterday, the poor woman had a hard time keeping the laughter out of her voice. I started laughing, too. It was amusing that time but…not very professional either and sometimes I need agencies and businesses to take me seriously if I’m going to get the answers we need.

I would love to be able to get money direct from my readers but I don’t know of a model that has worked so far. I’m playing around with a couple of ideas.

          • RHBB Reports says who you are and what. Slides under the radar a bit. Keeps you asking the questions. I like how it looks on the page.It is having your cake and eating it too. No one around these parts does not know who RHBB is already.

Never ask me what I Think! I always answer…

First, I’m filled with the warm fuzzys that you have come home!

Second, (I always say something nice before I complain) The comment section is crazy on my Android phone, so I will have trouble commenting until I’m at a real computer.

Third, Is this going to be a commercial site? (I wouldn’t blame you, but on the reader’s end it sucks!)

Fourth, The Marijuana industry is a large dynamic. It doesn’t take much imagination to see the incredible damage it has done to our society and environment. Conversely, it doesn’t take much imagination to see the incredible good that it has done for our economy.

Fifth, If you don’t have to satisfy your advertisers, it will be easier to remain honest in your opinions. Personal economics can torture your soul. What is best, feed the kids and take care of the family, Or tell the truth? Your choice.

Sixth, It will be fun, and instructive, to watch your struggle.

Seventh, I’ve discovered that nobody reads past seven, so, I’m glad to have you back, and I warmly welcome whichever direction that you go.

  • How about a discussion about the end of the marijuana market in rural Humboldt County and what it looks like when people need to create new jobs and new ways of making a living. On July 15th anyone in the state of Oregon that can build a fence will be allowed to grow 4 plants on their property. It may be a while, but the rest of the country will follow suit. What does Hum look like after the crash?? Sustainable forestry and Organic farms? Eco-tourism? Niche Cannabis farming? Wilderness tourism and hunting?

  • I would love to see comments on the lack of physicians in specific areas, for example (and most interesting to me), oncology. One woman I know had five or six different oncologists seeing her during the five years since she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Not five or six at a time, but five or six one after another. The reason: each previous doctor retired or left the area for one reason or another (mainly financial, and being in an isolated area). Although her medical records were passed along to each new doctor, it made her feel a real lack of continuity, like she had to start from scratch with each visit. Humboldt County definitely needs to find a way to keep doctors from leaving the area. If you haven’t needed a doctor for a serious medical issue yet, you probably will, and traveling to the Bay Area for treatment is an expensive and time-consuming endeavor.

Kym, I vote for keeping the RedHeaded Blackbelt title. As others have mentioned, that’s how people know you and your writings, and that’s how they can find you.

  • Welcome back,Kym! Looking forward to your coverage of Northern Mendo news. SoHum has ample sources for breaking news but in Mendo they are scant ,biased and intimidated by Tom Allman. ( I will keep voting for you Tom but trying to put a lid on the news we want to hear is just not right.) I cannot stress enough how important follow up stories are.
And like bluelaker4 said,we all know Redheaded Blackbelt. If it’s not broke, don’t fix it

  • Kym,
Can we seperate out a thread to talk about coastal issues such as sea level rise and coastal management policies both existing ones and the new policies developing?
There really is a lot at stake. Ag lands, infrastructure, recreation, resources, money etc……

  • Hey Kym-

    Nikon or Canon?

My rebel is one of the first ones and I’m considering replacing it. My issue with Canon is they stopped doing software updates for it and anything after xp won’t see it, so I need to pull the flash card and pop it into a usb reader. Not a big deal, but the battery is very hard to find. I’ve got several lenses, which means going Nikon I’d have no use or special lenses and would need to purchase those.

I really like the Nikons, but have had a Canon digi since the first elf, way back.I’m up in the air about it, because I have so much invested in the lenses.

  • I am an avid fan of your RHBB website. I check it every day. I would like to see the local news and your comments restricted to the Humboldt area only – not to have Mendocino and Trinity included. Thanks for your great work.
