HCSO Sponsors Leadership Academy

Humboldt Co. Sheriff’s Press Release:

From June 17, 2013 to June 21, 2013 the Humboldt County Sheriffs Office sponsored an Explorer Leadership Academy at College of the Redwoods for local youth. Seventeen local youth attended the Academy which was taught by current and retired law enforcement and military.

“This Academy is an exemplary example of a youth oriented program. It leads to the development of productive young adults who are seeking a career in law enforcement and law enforcement related fields. The advisors and staff associated with the Academy provide structure, leadership and an ethical example to the youth in our community,” said Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Downey.

The Explorers stayed on campus during the entire week and slept in the College of the Redwoods Dormitories. They attended numerous classes including classes on ethics, basic and advanced officer safety, tactical communications, active shooter response, Tasers, prison gangs and force option simulator training. The Explorers were also given tours of the Humboldt County Superior Court, Coroners Office, and Humboldt County Sheriff Correctional Facility.

Sheriff Mike Downey addressed the students at the beginning of the Academy and was present to congratulate them and present their certificates at the end of the Academy. Four awards were given to students at the conclusion of the Academy. They were for most inspirational, highest academic achievement, top leadership and physical fitness.

The Leadership Academy was possible because the Humboldt County Office of Education provided a $10,000.00 grant and Eureka Old Town Rotary who provided $1,000.00, along with numerous individuals and businesses who donated money.

According to Leadership Academy Director Andy Broese Van Groenou, who is the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office Explorer Coordinator, “This was our Fourth Leadership Academy and this was the best academy yet.”
