Lucerne Man Dies in Motorcycle Accident near Covelo

On Sunday, May 19, 2013, at approximately 1030 hours, 40 year old Harley D. DeCent of Lucerne, Ca. was traveling southbound on Crawford Road [near Covelo] on a 1987 Honda dirt bike.  As DeCent approached a clearly marked stop sign at the intersection of Crawford Road and Foothill Blvd., he failed to stop and continued through the intersection.  The motorcycle entered a dirt field and hit a dirt berm, causing it to be propelled 50 feet through the air, before landing on the ground.  DeCent was ejected from the motorcycle and thrown into a metal fence post.  DeCent was not wearing a helmet at the time of the collision and succumbed to his injuries.
 
Officers from the Garberville Area office of the California Highway Patrol were assisted at the scene by other first responders and emergency services including Covelo Volunteer Fire Department and Deputies from the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office.
 
Alcohol and or drug impairment as a factor in this collision remains under investigation.
 
The California Highway Patrol, Garberville Area, is investigating this incident.
