From the California Highway Patrol:
On July 30, 2012, at 5:35 pm, 24 year old Marcel Philip Martino of San Carlos, California was driving his 1996 Dodge Ram in the Brass Rail parking lot off Redwood Drive in Redway. While attempting to make a parking maneuver, Martino backed his vehicle into two parked vehicles. Martino then fled the scene southbound on Redwood Drive toward Garberville. As he passed Alderpoint Road, Martino turned his vehicle to the right, causing the right side of his vehicle to collide into the guardrail. His vehicle re-entered the southbound lane of Redwood Drive and collided into the rear of a 2006 Chevy Silverado driven by 52 year old Nancy Jean Best of Garberville, California, who was also traveling southbound on Redwood Drive, directly in front of Martino.
Martino fled the scene on foot and was located later that evening in the Garberville area where he was apprehended by the California Highway Patrol (CHP). Best was transported by ground ambulance to Jerold Phelps Hospital in Garberville with major injuries. Martino did not sustain any injuries as a result of this collision. Martino was booked into the Humboldt County Jail on felony DUI charges as well as felony and misdemeanor hit-and-run, and driving on a suspended driver’s license.
DUI is believed to be a factor in this collision. Best was wearing her seatbelt at the time of this collision and it is unknown if Martino was wearing his seatbelt. The Garberville Area CHP office is investigating this collision.
