Remembering the Old Stage Line

Just because I’ve always wanted to know where the stage lines ran through Humboldt and Mendocino, I’m printing this clipping I ran across while doing some research. There is a book written about it but I’ve never seen it.

It came from the Jan 1, 1897 issue of the Mendocino Dispatch Democrat.  I tried to find a map of the stage routes from Mendo to Humboldt.  I know they went through Usal and apparently through Fruitland to Scotia.

A fatal accident occurred between Harris

and Scotia on the Ukiah-Scotia stage

line Christmas night. A new driver was

on duty that trip and being unacquainted

with the road, he drove over a high embankment

in the darkness. The accident

was in Humboldt County, a few miles

beyond Fruitland and the next morning

the body of the driver was found be-

low the grade with the weight of one horse on top of him.

Both horses and the wagon were unhurt.

you should just go back to having this old blog; having to read all the comments on the LoCo cannot be good for your health…

Oh, hey! I was worrying. Yes. Maybe some peace and decency now. One thing I learned while scrambling around after whatever could have happened here is that the gorgeous image that is/was your masthead was taken from where you live. THAT has to have been a constant source of strength, and I hope I continues to be. xoxox

The “Stage” went down Mail / Bell Springs ridge… It was not as fancy as this Wells Fargo job… Another came up the coast and in thru Moody and down Indian Ck. and over the existing road to Garberville…
I’m amused by the older posts…

Since I live near the old “stage coach house” I have always wanted more of the history and have not come across any (in Whitethorn)
Maybe Ben Schill may be able to point in a good direction?

Sageplant… I’m not too good on stage routes… There are (or were) several “stage coach houses” in So Hum… Whitethorn… Fruitland Ridge… Pillipsville… Nielsen Ranch (Moody Road)… The Nielsen Ranch house had a sort of dormitory upstairs and lots of split lumber and pegs… All, except for the Whitethorn house, are torn down or lost to fire…

I grew up in a house on Fruitland ridge, close to the “stagecoach route”. The original part of the house on the property, over the kitchen, has hand hewn wood poles for rafters. Wondering if these poles could signify that this house was a Stagecoach Stop? Thanks for any help in finding sources that might help answer this questions.

There is another original “Stage Coach House” at the bottom of the hill on the south end of Bell Springs road, on hiway 101
